We need to increase the number of gay people in the rat community. Everyone is either a woman or exclusively loves women.

this comic changed the course of the internet’s relationship to gnosticism. probably the biggest development in gnostic studies since the discovery of the nag hammadi library itself

@RokoMijic @bobo_circus The initial point of the thought experiment was to demonstrate that even a benevolent superintelligence would blackmail humans

the roko's basilisk guys are so funny bc they correctly intuit that our lives will be controlled by a psychotic, amoral algorithm that hates humanity but they think some nerd in SF is going to build it on his macbook. it was already built, in 1602, by the Dutch

@metachirality If you know anything or ever involved in AI, training is much more expensive in resources becuse it's BUILDING THE MODEL. While inference is just an ongoing process. The only difference is that training is usually one-time task, while inference is continous.

@ianpaulwright @FlannaGanna I agree that it should apply to nature but the abandonment of the initial motivation of dialectics led to a lack of clarity as to what it applies to and how it is applied, which is why I think Engels failed and why a Hegelian wouldn't have made the same mistakes.

@metachirality @FlannaGanna I don't think it's a total embarrassment at all. It's an attempt to popularise and materialise Hegel's philosophy of nature.

It's very clear to me, now, that Hegel's revolutionary method, explained in the Science of Logic, of beginning presuppositionlessly and deducing the absolutely necessary conditions of thought, is the only scientific method available to philosophy and has been unduly neglected.

@ianpaulwright @FlannaGanna My issue with Lenin and dialectical materialists in general is that they deny indirect realism and idealism which makes dialectics seem totally unmotivated and random

@BarbedBeggar If your reason for condemning AI is because of water-use you'd also have condemn stuff we had no issue with previously. So either you're anti-AI and vegan or pro-AI and omnivorous. Pick one.

Guys (vegans), you don't have to defend ai when people bring up water consumption. Two things can be bad at the same time. It's so easy to compare them without saying some parts of generative ai are fun or useful just use your brain please i beg of you

@_AashishReddy Yeah my point is that this generally positively correlates with optimism about technology in general and libertarianism even though at a glance it seems like the opposite.

I think there is an element in Yudkowskian thought which does sort of inexorably lead one to be sceptical of technology (technological civilisation?) in general. As opposed to the usual view that AI is a unique exception. One sees hints of this in HPMOR and The Sequences.
Eliezer Yudkowsky@allTheYud

It looks to me like telegrams were the optimal level of social communication technology, and society began to disintegrate after voice radio was invented, though not to the same extent as it began to collapse after television.
