Raised Catholic near Cadbury’s: Chocolate manufacturers would experience a massive slump in sales during Lent. They were so successful in marketing Easter linked products that it became a peak season. Chocolate eggs have more to do with capitalism than Christianity.

🧵And we're off, ladies and gentlemen! It's "they're banning the word EASTER" week. Regular as clockwork... So here comes a history lesson and media lesson all rolled into one thread! PS, I can't believe there's no easter egg emoji? This was the best I could do - 🗿🥚 🤣 I digress! 1/19

So many of the arguments levelled against minority groups are verifiably false. Add in that fact-checking is time consuming, and negative coverage skews towards those groups = an information economy and ecosystem that fuels discrimination. We’re tired of charlatans.

EXC: .@GoodwinMJ’s new book “Suicide of a Nation: Immigration, Islam, Identity” is out now, and I’m only 5 chapters in and have found a huge amount of what appears to be false quotes and basic misinterpretations of data, that appear to be AI hallucinations. Matthew, can you explain the claims you made in the book that I’ve outlined in the below thread?

Total humiliation for UKIP in Liverpool when they actually tried to ‘Walk for Jesus'. Police let them out of their holding pen, they got about about ten yards, and were forced back by anti-fascists on three sides. Now hugely outnumbered and penned in behind barriers, relying completely on police protection. It’s going to be a bleak afternoon. And still no sign of Tenconi. This is why they call him TACO…

I sent “Eid Mubarak” to some close friends, privately. Even mentioning Muslims draws undue scrutiny and attention. Being held to a different standard is discrimination. REMEMBER The Tories gave the super wealthy tax breaks and sold off national companies, which meant higher bills for you. Many then joined Reform. Only Reform receives more than 90% of their funding from fossil fuels and high polluters. They’re bought so you can be sold.
Richard Tice MP 🇬🇧@TiceRichard

REMEMBER The Tories gave you Net Zero which meant higher energy bills and higher taxes Labour then made it worse Only @reformparty_uk can be trusted to cut your bills by scrapping Net Zero

@curioushaggis @Survation A well designed, fully randomised survey would give accurate results. The margin of error doesn’t reduce by increasing the number of respondents. It does carry a weakness on smaller cohorts within the sample group though. Good explanation here: greenbook.org/insights/focus…

While we're hooked on oil & gas we're vulnerable to price shocks caused by a rogue US president. It doesn't have to be like this. Invest in renewables, insulate our homes, cut the cost of living.
Mariana Mazzucato@MazzucatoM

This week's oil and gas price shocks show how vital clean energy is for long-term security and economic resilience. To mitigate exposure to future shocks and break Britain's underinvestment cycle, we need a green industrial strategy led by an active, entrepreneurial state. Man, it's kind of amazing how many things you just don't get, despite thinking of yourself as a genius in all areas of study. Look, this is my area of expertise, not yours. UBI is by definition unconditional. It is by definition universal. The entire reason we don't already have UBI has everything to do with the fact that those in power don't want everyone to gain the power to say NO to them and in so doing have less power for themselves. Because UBI is unconditional, it redistributes power downwards, to EVERYONE. The single biggest fear about UBI is that people with it will choose not to work. What does that say to you? It should say that there are a lot of people accepting shit wages to do jobs they don't want because they have no other real choice. Another name for that is wage slavery. That is the status quo and IT EXISTS BECAUSE UBI DOES NOT EXIST YET. With UBI, wages will need to go up for jobs that people don't want to do. You may need to pay more for your house cleaner for example. Do you want to pay more? Probably not. UBI is literally power to the People. That's why we don't already have it. If it were true that UBI is enslaving, then those in power would already have made sure it was implemented. How do you not see that? widerquist.com/basic-income-a… Yeah, we are the ones who trained the AI and yes we should get up and fight - FOR UBI - as our rightful dividend as our rightful share. Do you go around calling yourself a pussy for accepting stock dividends on stock you own? Do you think of yourself as a slave by accepting dividend income? UBI is a human right. That became true the moment land was privatized and we all lost the ability to live for free on the land that no one created. No one should be forced to work for the owner class thanks to survival resources being withheld and only provided in exchange for doing what the owner class wants. UBI is freedom and that's exactly why we don't have it yet, and must fight for it. Just as democracy was a redistribution of power in a time of kings, UBI is a redistribution of power in a time of billionaires. scottsantens.com/the-spaceballs…

Matt, your ongoing lashing out at losing so badly is frankly embarrassing. The Greens did NOT mobilise along ‘biraderi’ lines or abuse the postal vote process. The irony is that their win was emblematic of overcoming the Labour Party machine which HAS historically deployed such practices - which I have campaigned against for years. I actually would prefer postal votes be restricted to people who have a genuine difficulty in attending a polling station. But it is you who are promoting sectarianism whilst deliberately insulting ethnic minority voters, especially Muslims, by your attempts to delegitimise their democratic participation. Also your dismissal of swathes of white working class people without whose vote the Greens could not have won is interesting. Happily your contemptuous approach will ensure Reform will continue to lose in future elections too.
