Alpha School made a groundbreaking change to how we teach kids academics that every school should copy They started A/B testing every piece of learning material to give kids the most effective materials for every topic To accomplish this, they needed to divorce mastery tracking from curriculum. They needed to build a "routing" layer that has independent diagnostics/assessment in order to be able to run these A/B tests We're taking this one step farther at Recess; our product has a recursive/self-improving loop similar to how tiktok works. We're building an independent assessment and tracking layer, and then using classic ML-based-recommendation systems to show kids content for each node. This will automate the A/B tests and also allow different kids to get different types of content based on what will perform the best for them, vs. having one population-level curriculum that all kids follow. It's a bit like the difference between a cable television network and Youtube. Cable television creates a "program schedule". There's a set playlist of shows coming up and you follow that. Alpha is a GREAT network cable show; think HBO. Our approach looks more like HBO Max or Netflix or Youtube; we still syndicate all that amazing content, but every user is recommended slightly different content that makes sense for them. Not all users will see the same content; some will get content that no one else on the platform gets

All work spaces. Look at CEOs and other top professionals. Their work spaces are clear of anything not work related. Maybe a diploma hanging. Maybe one family picture but if I went to meet my doctor in her office and it was a pink explosion, I’d wonder where her priorities were. If I met with my lawyer and his office was filled with sports posters and personal items, I’d be going to a different lawyer.

A classroom should NOT EVER reflect a teacher’s personality. It should reflect the purpose of school, the class being taught, and informed research based practices for class decor. Teaching is not about the teacher. Ever.

I disagree. I had a teacher put up posters of classic rocks bands in class because that was his thing. Without that I wouldn’t have known about good music at a younger age. Picking up the vibes and idiosyncracies of the teacher is very important… which is why you can’t have loser teachers.

There are all these these valid critiques, but let’s just ignore them and pretend they are legit and accomplished something significant. The truth is that half the “curriculum” is 3rd party EdTech slop they cobbled together. The other half is in-house-made programs that we have no reason to believe are any better than stuff already on the market. It's really not a reinvention of education whatsoever. It's just marketing for people who want to believe.

There are definitely selection effects But I know the team fairly well and have visited 6 of the schools. They’re a competitor of mine so I should be biased to call it fake There are valid critiques of their approach (eg its “teaching to the test”) but the results are undeniable and real. They have accomplished something significant in education in both their academic approach and in their marketing

Their logical thinking is limited to 1 step. Or even 0 step. “I feel this way. I don’t know why” they rely on rote memorization and this is exactly why patients die under black doctors.

@ben_m_somers They don't really outperform everyone else because of "intelligence." It has a lot to do with selection bias and playing with statistics to create an impression to gullible people in their marketing.

the chart isn't commenting on what they specifically use and their innovation is not new content; it's routing kids between the content better Flour and water are really cheap, but the bread made depends a lot on the baker you have access to those tools the same as anyone else, but Alpha outperforms everyone else because they have added intelligence on top of them it's really a *much* better LMS more than anything.
