For example, during the Pakistan-India tensions last year, Chinese-made HQ-9B systems deployed by Pakistan reportedly failed to intercept incoming BrahMos cruise missiles. Instead, Pakistan relied heavily on electronic warfare and jamming to misguide the missiles, achieving roughly a 65% mitigation rate through EW rather than direct interception. And if we look at Iran’s air defense, despite having multiple Russian and indigenous systems, they have struggled to intercept advanced aircraft or missiles—most of their successful engagements have been against slow drones rather than high-end threats. The real takeaway: air defense is not a magical shield. It’s a probabilistic system designed to reduce damage, protect critical assets, and force the attacker to spend far more resources. Judging an air-defense system by a few penetrations misses the entire point of modern warfare. Layered defense, interception probability, and mission specialization—not perfection—are what determine effectiveness.
