MLB Strike 2027 - Commish Game

The MLB owners nailed this proposal. 100%. A fairly wide cap gap (245m cap / 171m floor) + consolidation and revenue sharing of local + national TV. Top teams still have ability to spend ~70m more than the bottom feeders. But strategic roster building matters more across the league w/ cap structure. And MLB player salaries will continue to rise. This cap structure will also create a free agency frenzy window in the off-season like we have never seen before (like NFL, NBA, NHL have) — because teams and players will feel pressure to get deals done before cap $$ dries up! A fun week for fans to lean into. And for MLB to own. Bravo. Players, get on board.

The MLB’s contract negotiation is an important refresher that if your conception of class isn’t based on your relationship to capital then you can easily be steered into believing idiotic things based purely on media and/or personal grievances.

The MLBPA's response, in part, to today's proposal: "The owners responded today with a demand for a salary cap system, something generations of players have fought against. The last time the owners made such an explicit push for a cap—over 30 years ago—it led to the longest work stoppage in MLB history. For generations, our members have fought against cap systems because they harm players at all levels, erode or eliminate contractual guarantees, pit player against player, lead to more work stoppages, not less, and get worse for players over time. Caps don’t lower ticket prices for fans, eliminate tanking or ensure teams are run with equal competence. They suffocate competition by offering owners an all-purpose excuse for inaction and mediocrity."

Reminder: MLB Owners are not your friends They are going to hammer home that a cap is what the fans want to even the playing field. Don’t let this fool you; these billionaires couldn’t care less about what you or I think. It’s all about maximizing profits. It always has been.
