Baseball’s next labor war will come down to three numbers: o Salary cap o Salary floor o Luxury tax mlbstrike2027.com/salarycap ☝️ We built a tool that lets fans design their own CBA proposal... and see who hates it most.

@johnbarker @LanceMcAlister OK, that's fair. cc @JeffPassan: "The first lesson of any collective bargaining negotiation: The details are everything." Still a bummer seeing 70% of fans side with owners. $245 cap won't deliver parity, and would hurt players. @jakeures said it best: x.com/jakeures/statu…

The MLB’s contract negotiation is an important refresher that if your conception of class isn’t based on your relationship to capital then you can easily be steered into believing idiotic things based purely on media and/or personal grievances.

@mlbstrike2027 @LanceMcAlister I do remember it, and I don’t think we can compare 1994 to 2026-2027. It’s a dramatically different environment and fan base. There was also a much different perspective of owners vs players then compared to today. Also, social media, etc. help keep people engaged.

Would you be willing to give up the 2027 MLB season in order to get a salary cap into the game?

@JeffPassan "So, is Manfred wrong? No. Is it the entire story? No. And that is the first lesson of any collective bargaining negotiation: The details are everything." 💯

The MLBPA and MLB have made their first proposals in what's expected to be a prolonged labor negotiation. All that's at stake is the future of baseball. Free at ESPN: A breakdown of what all of it means, what you need to know and where everything stands. espn.com/mlb/story/_/id…

@AEM366 You said real, not US. All 3 of those leagues have no hard cap, parity, billions in revenue, growing annually. A sport can succeed with no cap. NFL, NBA, NHL have caps because those owners broke those unions, and it solved some problems but also created others (esp for players)

@GageEHC @mlbstrike2027 The cap is absolutely not more important than the floor. The floor is so so much more important.

sure is about maximizing profits but that doesn’t mean what fans want is irrelevant. Non NY/LA market fans overwhelmingly prefer a cap/floor. heck, fans in general do if polls are to be believed Ownership/fan interest just runs parallel here
Thomas Nestico@TJStats

Reminder: MLB Owners are not your friends They are going to hammer home that a cap is what the fans want to even the playing field. Don’t let this fool you; these billionaires couldn’t care less about what you or I think. It’s all about maximizing profits. It always has been.

@jonbecker_ No doubt, the Marlins and all 30 Owners could afford a $170 floor with more equitable revenue sharing. What doesn't make sense: There won't be enough quality free agent players to justify that amount of spending by 2027. Would have to happen via trades, which seems far-fetched

Centralized TV revenue socializes a lot of the money a lot more than it is currently, and therefore "How am I to believe the Marlins can double payroll?" is an easy question to answer given the proposal, irrespective of your opinion in either direction

I have no skin in this game and it is far too early in the process to care much about details but I have already seen about a dozen tweets saying "how are teams going to reach the salary floor if their payrolls are way lower now?" when the league's proposal explains the answer!

@garymo2007 It's as though they are completely unaware that the other major sports have caps, and have for years, that they can look to as examples and see why they work, what MLB could learn from them and do a little better, etc.

The national baseball media has demonized a cap for so long they can't even approach honestly trying to explain it to the readers and listeners who they've programmed for years. It's sad to watch, and I'm irritated in advance by how many dumb questions they'll spawn trying to.
