He was 61. A recipient of the Maha Vir Chakra, Col Wangchuk led troops of the Ladakh Scouts (Indus Wing) across the glaciated heights of Chorbat La on 30 May 1999, without artillery support, securing one of the earliest successes for India during the Kargil Conflict. He came to be known as the ‘Lion of Ladakh’. We salute Col Wangchuk for his courage, leadership, and distinguished service to the Nation. #WATCH | Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand | Atul Kumar, who used to carry pilgrims to Kedarnath Dham on a horse or mule, cleared the IIT-JAM 2025 and has been selected for IIT Madras to the MSc Mathematics programme. Speaking to ANI, he says, "I am from a small village in Rudraprayag... I did not know much till the 12th standard. There is not much awareness in hilly areas. I did not know that something like IITs even exists. I did not take the entrance exam after completing the 12th grade. But then I got to know through teachers that I could pursue a Master's degree from IIT. My teachers and friends supported me and motivated me a lot... I started my preparation in July last year because I was unable to study in June, when the Kedarnath yatra was taking place. I used to take travellers from Gaurikund on horses and mules... My motivation was to move on from this place, this line of work... People are delighted that I cracked the exam. Many people have called me to congratulate..."

केन्द्रीय रेल मंत्री श्री अश्विनी वैष्णव व मुख्यमंत्री श्री पुष्कर सिंह धामी ने आज जनासू (पौड़ी गढ़वाल) में ऋषिकेश-कर्णप्रयाग रेल परियोजना के अंतर्गत सुरंग संख्या T-8 और T-8M के ब्रेकथ्रू के अवसर पर आयोजित कार्यक्रम में प्रतिभाग किया। इस अवसर पर केंद्रीय रेल मंत्री श्री अश्विनी वैष्णव और मुख्यमंत्री श्री पुष्कर सिंह धामी ने संयुक्त रूप से सुरंग स्थल पर पहुंचकर निरीक्षण किया। इस दौरान उन्होंने निर्माण कार्यों का जायजा लिया और अधिकारियों से सुरंग की जानकारी ली। केंद्रीय रेल मंत्री श्री अश्विनी वैष्णव ने सुरंग के सफल ब्रेकथ्रू पर खुशी जताते हुए कहा कि यह उत्तराखण्ड के विकास की दिशा में एक महत्वपूर्ण कदम है। उन्होंने इस उपलब्धि के लिए सभी रेलवे अधिकारियों, कर्मचारियों और श्रमिकों को बधाई दी। उन्होंने कहा कि ऋषिकेश-कर्णप्रयाग रेल परियोजना का कार्य तेजी से प्रगति कर रहा है और जल्द ही इस रेल लाइन पर संचालन शुरू होने की उम्मीद है। केंद्रीय मंत्री ने कहा कि यह परियोजना राज्य के पर्वतीय क्षेत्रों को रेल नेटवर्क से जोड़ने की दिशा में मील का पत्थर साबित होगी। उन्होंने कहा कि यह (देवप्रयाग सौड़ से जनासु तक) 14.57 किलोमीटर लंबी रेलवे सुरंग उत्तराखंड की ही नहीं बल्कि पूरे भारत में सबसे लंबी सुरंग है। उन्होंने कहा कि इस परियोजना से ऋषिकेश से कर्णप्रयाग का सफर सात घंटे से घटकर सिर्फ दो घंटे का हो जाएगा। यह हर मौसम में दूरदराज के इलाकों तक पहुंच आसान करेगा और उत्तराखण्ड में पर्यटन व आर्थिक विकास को बढ़ावा देगा। यह चार धाम रेल परियोजना को पूरा करने की दिशा में भी बड़ा कदम है। इस उपलब्धि के साथ आरवीएनएल ने भारत के सबसे मुश्किल इलाकों में आधुनिक निर्माण तकनीक में अपनी मजबूत जगह बनाई है।  मुख्यमंत्री श्री पुष्कर सिंह धामी ने कहा कि यह सुरंग उत्तराखण्ड के विकास की दिशा में एक ऐतिहासिक उपलब्धि है। ऋषिकेश-कर्णप्रयाग रेल परियोजना राज्य के दूरस्थ पर्वतीय क्षेत्रों को देश के बाकी हिस्सों से जोड़ने में एक अहम भूमिका निभाएगी। यह न केवल स्थानीय लोगों के लिए आवागमन को सरल बनाएगी, बल्कि क्षेत्र में पर्यटन, व्यापार और आर्थिक गतिविधियों को भी एक नई गति देगी। उन्होंने कहा कि प्रधानमंत्री श्री नरेंद्र मोदी जी के नेतृत्व में राज्य में इंफ्रास्ट्रक्चर विकास को नई दिशा और गति मिली है। देवप्रयाग-सोड़ से श्रीनगर जनासु तक की यह सुरंग तकनीकी दृष्टि से भी एक बड़ी उपलब्धि है और यह दिखाती है कि कठिन भौगोलिक परिस्थितियों के बावजूद हम विकास के कार्यों को सफलतापूर्वक अंजाम दे सकते हैं। उन्होंने यह भी कहा कि टनकपुर बागेश्वर रेल परियोजना का सर्वे भी हो चुका है जल्द ही आगे की कार्यवाही की जाएगी। इस मौके पर कैबिनेट मंत्री डॉ.धन सिंह रावत, गढ़वाल सांसद श्री अनिल बलूनी, जिलाधिकारी डॉ. आशीष चौहान, जिलाधिकारी टिहरी श्री मयूर दीक्षित, आरवीएनएल के चेयरमैन एवं मैनेजिंग डायरेक्‍टर श्री प्रदीप गौर, अपर जिलाधिकारी अनिल सिंह गर्ब्याल, संयुक्त मजिस्ट्रेट श्री दीपक राम चंद्र शेट, जीएम उत्तर रेलवे श्री अशोक कुमार वर्मा, प्रबंधक निदेशक श्री भानु प्रकाश, मुख्य परियोजना प्रबंधक आरवीएनएल श्री अजित यादव, जीएम आरवीएनएल श्री सुमित जैन सहित अन्य उपस्थित थे।
