This piece is getting a second life on Substack because the hate trains have only continued to evolve. If you want to understand why the HR fandom is so crazy, I think I contextualized it pretty well. Understanding it helps a little.

The only positive is that casual fans and observers can recognize that this behaviour is completely detached from reality, and that the attacks are completely unwarranted. It’s also emphasizing that fandom isn’t activism. open.substack.com/pub/exiledfan/…

I try not to be nostalgic, but 2010s Toronto was such a moment tbh. music, creatives, club scene, etc. Now, like in so many cities, a lot of creatives have been priced out and it just doesn’t feel the same

recently started watching Werner Herzog docs for the first time & it's so awesome and disarming that he just gives you his own personal take via voiceover. 2/3 through Grizzly Man and he's like "Unfortunately, I think nature is merciless and bears have no light behind the eyes"

idk I like being able to enjoy someone’s music or art but also be like “the opinion they have on this one thing is wack” or be able to critique something they’ve done without it feeling like you’re betraying them? stan brain needs to be studied

@HUDC0IS @SadBisexualGal It's telling a completely different story. The US version is my favourite show, but I still appreciate the UK one for the boundaries it broke and it did what it wanted to very well.

@SadBisexualGal I find the comparison to the US one a more fitting comparison to its journey to air, esp with the female audience responding to the romance, but the UK one is what set it off. It's weird for the OP to use those pics with the Davies quote though.

@misterminsoo It's because fandom isn't inherently progressive, even if it centers progressive topics. Slogans are always embraced because it serves as a defense (and branding) which gives them more leeway and a proxy cause to claim while supporting their fandom object. It is depressing

Being serious for a second: It's really disheartening that ARMY is this casually & gleefully misogynistic. When BTS was getting big in the mid-2010s, so many people praised them for their lyrics about self-love, acceptance, etc. Now it's just rabid misogyny, racism, homophobia...

@freakenomenon "I hope your favorite character dies" is boring. "I hope someone has an interesting opinion about one of your interests but their reasoning clearly shows they are terribly misinterpreting the story" is scary and can happen.
