The 2024 Knicks-Sixers series was one of my favorites in recent memory. This one should be just as fun. Some long, scrambled thoughts on the matchup and what I'm watching: Who's guarding Brunson? It'll probably be VJ to start. He defended Brunson for longer than he guarded any player this season and held him to 8-for-24 shooting in 22 minutes as the primary defender. Kelly Oubre, whose length bothered Brunson in Games 1 and 2 in 2024, will also get some reps on him. Who's guarding Maxey? Likely Bridges to start, but Maxey torched Bridges all regular season. If Bridges can't keep up, expect Hart to take some turns. Jose Alvarado will get some shifts and pick Maxey up full court. Double-big: This is a big Mitchell Robinson series, and the Knicks should go double big often (certainly more than they did all season). Mitchell Robinson is the best chance to limit Embiid. He's also the league's best offensive rebounder. Philly is not a good defensive rebounding team, even though it improved as the first round progressed. The Embiid matchup: Robinson will get his chances, as will KAT. But I believe OG and Josh Hart will get a lot of turns on Embiid, as KAT serves as a roamer while guarding Kelly Oubre. The Celtics tried this approach in Game 7. Also, maybe the Knicks will try some zone? Most effective coverage against Philly's O. Embiid/Maxey pick-and-roll: The Sixers will still go to the two-man game between Embiid and Maxey, but they're also going to target Brunson and KAT often. If KAT isn't guarding Embiid, the PnR won't be as effective. The Knicks also ice ball screens, forcing them to the sideline. They tapped into this during the regular season, but I'm sure Nurse will have plenty of counters. Oubre the X-factor: Because Brunson and KAT will defend Oubre, the Sixers will use him as a screener to put Brunson and KAT - the Knicks' two worst defenders - in action. They're also going to shade off of him. He's a good cutter off of Embiid, but Oubre has to make threes this series. Shot 16% from three against Boston. Also, when KAT is guarding Oubre, Brunson will guard VJ. Could see Philly run some guard-to-guard ball screens. What will the Sixers do with Josh Hart? The Knicks want to force Embiid to guard in space. If Embiid matches up with KAT, the Knicks will spam the Brunson-KAT PnR. Philly could put a wing on KAT and have Embiid roam while guarding Hart. NYK would counter by using Hart as a screener. In 2024, Nick Nurse was comfortable leaving Hart open from three. He shot 43% from three in that series and made them pay. Wonder if Nurse will take the same approach. Hart shot 21% from three in Round 1.

Painter is very clearly going to be good one day. This season was always about going through the growing pains. He’s shown flashes and the stuff is there.
