This hits the nail on the head in relation to the striking doctors. And indeed Labour in opposition endlessly made the facile suggestion that all the Conservative government need to do was “get round the table” and negotiate.
Alex Deane@ajcdeane

One sympathises with any government facing such unreasonable demands. But Streeting implied in opposition that he’d be able to fix this. Indeed he said he was “beyond furious” with the Tories when the doctors went on strike. Now he’s mulling banning strikes. Reality bites

The UK has crossed a line. Welfare spending: £333 billion Income tax revenue: £331 billion We’re now paying out more than we bring in from workers. This is unsustainable.

Ollie Robinson has always been a good archetypal English seamer. But we shouldn’t go back to him. He’s 32, still the same person, lacks the intensity, professionalism and fitness of the top guys, & would only ever be a stopgap that doesn’t take the team forward. A big no from me.

"T20 is purely for the spectators. It is not a cricketer’s sport. Yes, cricketers play it, but it is like fast food. Test cricket is real cricket... Please do not banish Tests. That is the real cricket we are all here for." — Sir Gordon Greenridge. #TestCricketMatters

@L_BHAFC How’s his pace in the final hour of the day? That was always a big issue with Robinson. He’s not a natural athlete and at 32 years old he’s not going to suddenly metamorphose into a whippet. Maybe if he was 25 or 26.

This is Walker Smith. After dedicating 17 years to Waitrose, he was recently dismissed. The reason? For attempting to stop a shoplifter nicking Easter eggs. Yes you read that right. He should be applauded, not sacked. Shameful @waitrose. Re-employ Walker Smith!

Richard injecting & taking testosterone resulted in thousands of East German girls being very ill, it shortened their lives, ruined their health & several died very young. Actual evidence & historical data does not support medicalising children with body dysmorphia. Especially when actual data again shows us the demographic of the children doing this. In a few years you remember which side you pushed, & I hope you take responsibility for that?

My timeline is suddenly filled with posts along the lines of “We can easily give pensioners a better deal if we cut immigration/scrap DEI/end foreign aid/find some other footling saving.” Most of them look like bots, which raises the question: Who wants to push this narrative? Some unfriendly foreign power, presumably. For the avoidance of doubt, of course we should cut immigration, scrap DEI and end foreign aid. But that will barely make a dent in the budget. The biggest spending items are health and social security, and pensions are the biggest element of this latter. Politicians who don’t want to tackle these budgets a don’t want to cut spending. Every British party is currently failing this test.

Reform is trying to get every possible barnacle off the boat. But if they win on this basis they would enter govt with the same issue Starmer faced: pitching marginal change to turn Britain around when it requires major reform! Just as Starmer overestimated the benefits of "stability" for growth, Farage and co massively overestimate (probably getting the sign wrong) any net economic benefits from proposed migration restrictions. As I say in my Times column today, the realignment of British politics on national identity vs cosmopolitan lines is downgrading economic policy to a secondary consideration. Things will get worse before they get better.

🚨 WATCH: Nigel Farage formally commits to the state pension triple lock if Reform UK win the next election "The people to whom pensions are being paid, certainly compared to a younger generation today, are those who have actually worked and paid into the system"

@ReemAmirIbrahim Yes. We need an element of universality in the system to maintain support for a safety net. And means testing everyone is expensive.

@FraserNelson Having a separate income tax called “national insurance” is worse and merely serves as a way of obscuring the true levels of personal tax and encouraging political dishonesty at election time.

@tomhfh @LoftusSteve I’d also raise the age of eligibility for full state pensions to 76. Maybe pay half the full amount after 70

@miriam_cates @tomhfh If every state payment is means tested, you will have insufficient support for a safety net. By all means argue for an end to the triple lock but don’t argue for an end to universality (unless you’re prepared to argue for manifesto spending cuts and a much smaller state)

By 2027, there will be 3million pensioners who pay higher or additional rate tax. These people, by definition, are in the top 20% of all UK earners. Yet they will still receive a £12K a year state pension, in a direct transfer of cash from the poorer young to the wealthier old.

‘You won’t let me talk!’ Journalist Carole Malone and @miriam_cates have an explosive debate over whether the triple lock for state pensions should be maintained.
