Some executive at ABC: “We need a nice little theme song for our new cop sitcom.” Some guy: “Yeah, ok, think I’ll just throw down one of the funkiest grooves in the history of music then.”

Here is a huge positive to modern life that gets no press. I have an old 2009 Toyota, and the AUX port crapped out about a year ago. Went to YouTube. Young, enthusiastic guy explains how to fix it. It is not obvious - involves taking the dashboard apart in a counter-intuitive way, but once you see it, it's a 15 minute fix. There are actually dozens of videos showing how to do this, and they collectively have well over 200k views. Had this happened in 1995, I would have just lived with it. But the combo of the replacement AUX jack available from Amazon and the video of the simple (but not obvious) fix, I fixed it. I HAVE DONE THIS DOZENS OF TIMES. Replaced the control panel of my dishwasher. Replaced the ice maker in the fridge. Fixed a wonky sanding head on my drill press. Mastered a bandsaw technique that I use for my sculpture. On and on and on... I think it is likely no exaggeration to say billions of fixes and skill upgrades have been performed worldwide that would not have been performed if it were not for the instruction freely given peer-to-peer on YouTube. Take a moment to be happy about this. The busted item keeps performing, rather than going to the landfill. The person learning and doing the fix gains a sense of mastery and saves money. It's an unmixed blessing. Stop doomscrolling. Think of what is busted in your house, find the YouTube video on how to fix it, and fix it.

Top Gun turns 40, so does its scrappy “underdog” alternative, Iron Eagle. A logic-defying premise that somehow totally works thanks to killer aerial photography, a wildly charismatic Louis Gossett Jr., and a cracking soundtrack. Totally forgot he played music in the cockpit 🤣

9:45am: Disappointing to see the lack of rain this morning. It pulled a Carolina split and moved south & north of most of our area. Still watching for possible storm development later this afternoon. I’ll be tracking on @Queen_City_News. #cltwx #ncwx #scwx

True story: When I was in the first grade at Bethel Elementary in Canton, I kicked a little boy in the junk. Why? He lifted my dress up on the playground and showed my ALF underwear to the entire class. I was taken to the principal’s office, where I was informed I would be paddled after my parents were notified. Daddy showed up like a knight in shining armor. There was no paddling that day. There was a trip to McDonald’s for a Happy Meal and an ice cream cone. After school, Daddy drove to the little boy’s house—a kid he knew well. It was his best friend’s son. I sat in the truck and watched as my daddy let them both know: if I was touched again, Daddy would whoop them both. I was a six-year-old girl. I had been humiliated and sexualized in front of all of my peers. The teachers did nothing. The principal did nothing. And the boy who did it would’ve gotten away with it if I hadn’t stood up for myself. Daddy made sure my bravery was rewarded. Then he made sure that I witnessed that bad things came to those who did bad things. It was one of the most precious life lessons I’ve ever learned. 💯

Justin, a 9-year-old student, is spending his three-day school suspension working alongside his father after a playground confrontation led to a “zero-tolerance” disciplinary action. The incident began when another student allegedly cornered and attempted to punch Justin, who responded with a single defensive strike that ended the encounter instantly. While school officials suspended the boy for “handling the situation wrong,” his parents are publicly standing by his decision to protect himself, with his mother telling staff their opinion was “wrong” and his father rewarding his honesty and restraint with a steak dinner. The family’s firm stance that they “raise sheepdogs, not sheep” has sparked a massive debate across the region regarding school self-defense policies and the right of a child to stand their ground when threatened. As Justin completes his “work suspension” at home, his story is being shared as a powerful example of parental support for traditional values of self-reliance and the importance of stopping a fight once a threat is eliminated. The community is now rallying behind the family’s message, honoring a young boy who told the truth and refused to be a victim in a situation that has redefined the conversation on school safety and discipline.

Thinking about starting a company that has the initials DS and I want it to have hints of patriotism. Based on that, which of these looks the best? I’m also open to other suggestions.

Have you ever heard of Duke’s secret basketball game? In 1944, the all-white Duke basketball team faced off against the all-black North Carolina Central University team in an interracial game. Due to strict segregation laws, the teams had to exercise extreme caution and barred the doors to NCCU’s gym to keep out prying eyes. NCCU won, 88–44. They had so much fun that instead of heading home, they mixed their squads and played a second game. One Duke player later told his family: “We sure had fun and I especially had a good time, for most of the fellows playing with me were Southerners. And when the evening was over, most of them had changed their views quite a lot.” Today marks the 82nd anniversary of the secret matchup. 💙
