@NEUnion Where was this attitude when the govt said months ago there was no more money, schools must make efficiencies? We get the point about excess leadership, but that’s not the driver on this occasion. I’d like to have seen a lot of pressure months ago to support fully funded rises

Teachers and parents will not tolerate academies that put profit and personal gain ahead of educational standards. While Harris Academy spends £3.2m a year on senior management they tell our members to get ready of redundancies. We will organise against this.

A personal podcasting high point: I interviewed legendary rugby coach Eddie Jones. We talked about all sorts of aspects of coaching: how do you observe better; how do you connect with players; how & when do you tell players they weren't selected & lots more. @Strickomaster Once again, coming at the latest point possible. A gap too big to fill, a long road of guess work ahead. All the while effectively gambling with ppl’s jobs and children’s education. When will education get a proper funding timeline and not fumbling papers around at the 11th hr.

@warwickmansell @BBCr4today Also worth adding in there are thousands of staff and leaders who had no role in the decision of academising, who work tirelessly for the good of children. Academies aren’t new, and there are a lot of us trying to do our best in a sector which is always at the hands of the govt

Good to hear @BBCr4today seeking out both sides of the academies debate today. But this debate often seems to generate more heat than light. Brief thread now, with some thoughts, given I’ve been investigating the policy since 2000.

Great to read, how they actually make this happen I’m keen to hear more on. One of the key steps is giving LA admission control, so the greed of one school doesn’t impact other schools and inevitably children

.@bphillipsonMP has told academy trusts the current system 'incentivises' schools to 'avoid more challenging communities' 'But that chase for a narrow shadow of excellence, the kind that only succeeds by pushing problems onto others, that ends now' schoolsweek.co.uk/academy-trust-…

After engaging in numerous coaching conversations with headteachers in recent weeks, I have reached a firm conclusion: If you do not currently work in a school, you truly have no idea about the extent of the challenges we are facing.

@kevbartle @ssat Has the MAT experiment run its course? Not saying LEA is the answer, but in my borough there are 6 secondaries, 4 CEOs, 2 exec heads on top of HT of HoS.

47% of HTs in years 6-10 of headship said they planned to leave soon or felt stuck in the role. Just one finding from @ssat's Rethinking Headship survey. Join us at 6pm on Thursday 18th July to find out more and our recommendations for the sector. ssatuk.co.uk/event/labourin…

@jonathansimons Very interesting concept. Ask young teachers, they’ve been saying why the increase in employer pension recently (5%) and not salary…I see arguments from all sides. Hats off for creative options - remember it’s an option not a cost saver

I wonder if the MOD or even the parliamentary salaries of MPs have to budget their staffing based on guess work and assumptions for the pay year that starts 6 weeks ahead? Why is education treated with such disrespect and contempt. THE EDUCATION SYSTEM IS BROKEN!

@HannahP95844309 @Strickomaster The problem is it’s all planned on guess work. The future of the country resources on best guesses. Did you budget a 5% rise? Or less? Did you add in estimated funding of 1/2/3/3.5% and fill the gaps? It’s shocking the way we are left to plan and forecast on such poor data…ugh

@Strickomaster Unions far too quiet too. We deserve to know and if you've got time to visit MATs and do PR work you've got time to get the STRB out so head teachers can sign off their budgets before summer holidays

@drum980 @DanielKebedeNEU The difference is dependent on context. In my borough, 6 secondaries 4 MATs and one stand alone with exec head and two heads. Sooooo probably millions in public funds, plus LEA funding, with zero joined up work. The trust systems has not worked for all, that is for certain

@etaknipsa @DanielKebedeNEU Yes, because I’m lucky to work for an organisation that looks after its employees and children. When I was an LA head I had support I paid for; what’s the difference?

What's top slicing? Well the other week I met a MAT CEO on a £220k salary. They were wearing a Breitling watch. The watch likely cost the same as an SEN Teaching assistant. That's top slicing.

@tombennett71 Still scrolling for the point that these children also have parents at some point in this… very little said about poor parenting pipeline to prison. Maybe it’s just the problem pronouncing plenty of Ps or it’s easier to throw mud at schools on the regular

In the UK there is no school to prison pipeline. This is a US term, with no equivalent mechanism. UK schools don’t criminalise students, and exclusions are only used on students who either persistently disrupt lessons, or whose actions are abusive, violent or harass other vulnerable children. Exclusions do not cause criminality. Extreme behaviour drives both.

Apparently there’s a teacher (think she’s a teacher; I’ve never actually heard of her) insisting that using TLAC techniques precludes doing all the things teachers who use them routinely do: listen to children, honor them, appreciate them etc. The fact that so many teachers quite easily use the techniques to create loving positive classrooms where children thrive & learn underscores that if you think structure & routines preclude connection & caring or that being able to shape students’ attentional habits destroys their subjecthood the limitation is your own. Again I know this because I have seen so many teachers prove the opposite. Daily. Cheers.

Schools have admirably dealt with refugee children for years: Syria, Afghanistan, Ukraine, Hong Kong. An influx of kids from private schools is not quite the challenge the Education Secretary seems to think it is!
