@PlayingInCanvas Yes, the knowledge decaying quality - is a real problem with AI. That is why many LLM models have a hard timeline cap for data. And a new approach is needed, something like reinforced learning for extrapalating it's complexity, instead of interpolating through existing knowledge.

@mrmaxm Good point, and I think there is an additional tangible issue coming soon. AI was trained on human knowledge (articles, books, concepts, code). More and more people using AI, less original content, less training data to continue AI improvements.

Lets assume if a claim of "100x productivity with AI" is true. Then why did companies that hyped some ideas that nobody believed in, did not prove everyone wrong? Like "AAA games in a browser", or "Metaverse with thousands of players in a browser". Where are they?

Absolutely. Because it requires real innovation and new solutions to make it even closer to reality, which don't exist today. And AI has nothing to offer here, as it is a reflection of past, not the future. Humans - have to engineer and architecture, while AI "can" potentially help (not yet proven though).

@mrmaxm AAA games in a browser or Metaverse with thousands of players needs technical excellence. AI can help, speed up the iteration, but it can't replace the mind guiding it.

@ai_sentience Plenty. Sometimes some controller of my muscle starts to bug out, and for 20 mins it is twitching. We agents call it fasciculation. Probably a signal compression issue.

1. You will use some payment providers and pay a cut anyway. Developing own payment systems - infeasible in gamedev. In steam you download once and patches. Online, you have to serve content even for mistake navigations. 5-15% of your revenue will just go to cover CDN bills. 2. Compression does not solve the problem, only postponed it. 3. With Steam they wont even download your game and wont leave bad reviews with such hardware. While on the web you will have to deal with potato devices and unhappy users. 4. Runescape AAA? 5. Do you expect a kid to use paypal or crypto wallet on some random website to pay for micro transactions?

@mrmaxm 1. Cheaper than the Steam commission 2. You can actually use a lot. With texture compression it's not a blocker. 3. Good luck running any new native AAA running on a 10 year old chromebook 4. Depends. Ogame, Runescape and others did well 5. Paypal, crypto wallets.

When someone says "With WebGPU web games will be revolutionized" - they do not understand the web games platform. Same with WASM. Been hyped, and pushed as a silver bullet, and it is not. Web 3D is a tough and complex platform. It is not just another "compilation target".

@wavedash Absolutely. Developing workflows for complex tools - is the same. You might find out about users struggles, but asking for a solution - almost always results in a bad design choices. The solution should be guided by deep flow understanding, problems - are signals for action.

Player feedback is often wrong about the solution and almost always right about the problem. Listen to the problem.

AAA is not possible on the web, regardless of GAPI. Multiple reasons, some of them: 1. Network bandwidth (it actually costs) and latency 2. Limited resources in a browser - you don't get to use all RAM and VRAM on the system. 3. Massive fragmentation of hardware - good luck maki AAA run on 10 years old chromebook. 4. No retention. Impatience. And different user psychology. 5. Difficult / no monetisation, while costs of production and delivery are higher than on native. Many of these limitations are not understood well by those who believe that commercially viable AAA is even a remote possibility on the web. It is not.

@mrmaxm A AAA game that works well. Doesn't have to be AAA but something polished and optimised. All I see are demos and if someone makes an actual game with a lot going on then it's working slow.

@DVLPLONDON What would be a "complete content" in your opinion?

@mrmaxm It's the same issue as with WebGL 10+ years ago. It's not about the technology lacking but no good quality, complete content. Another issue is the performance, which is still really bad with large scenes. Well-optimised JS is almost as fast as WASM so that won't be a game changer

Once you’re past 35, are you just going to keep being gradually more tired every year for the rest of your life or is a there a second wind somewhere? Anybody suddenly stumble upon newfound energy in their 40s? 50s? 60s, maybe with retirement? Naturally, no HRT or hacks

@texasrunnerDFW Sports can lead to injuries unfortunately, especially professional ones. My father never did any sports, but neither he did any decent physical exercises, which I don't think was healthy either. Balance is needed.

@mrmaxm She preserved all her energy by being lazy for 60 years so now she has it all saved up! I started running competitively in my early 30s, so I think I peaked too soon and now I just have aching joints 😂

I recently realized it makes more sense for question marks or exclamation points to come at the beginning of a sentence, with periods reserved to mark the end: ?Why not do this. !You know right away what kind of sentence it is. It may look strange, but we would quickly adjust.

@francoisfleuret If a solution - is user facing product, then the engineering path can vary, so "researcher" still leads to end result (the product), they just don't know exact path in advance.

Before our current client, we knew nothing about warehouse logistics, what types of AGVs or pallet trucks exist, or how the processes generally are. But researching and learning that stuff, instead of asking "provide us with a warehouse specialist" - allowed us to become specialists ourselves. Now instead of waiting for a chain of people, we can just go directly into engineering.

When I interview candidates, I always ask about their willingness to work in the factory. One said he was a researcher, not a factory worker, so I asked how he measured part-to-part variance for a part on his resume. He could not explain. All he had done was training without considering the data distribution from different manufacturing processes. In our realm, you do whatever it takes to understand a problem. If it involves chemistry, you learn chemistry. If it involves aerodynamics, you learn aerodynamics. There is nothing you cannot learn or do. Thus, the distinction between research and engineering is extremely blurred.

Cognitive delegation. Humans have been doing it for thousands of years, by delegating to technology: farming, navigation, communication, even professions - is a delegation on societal level. But it has to be done with care. As wrong choices of dependency will lead to personal degradation.
