@RadarHits The working population did not grow significantly, the unemployment in the USA is relatively low. So no new jobs are ok.

@cybereality @cixliv Well, the HTC Viverse appears to be acting a bit more strategic though.

@cixliv Still think VR has potential, but whatever was going on wasn't working. Can't completely blame Meta, since other companies like Valve and HTC didn't do any better.

@XorDev 3 years ago in a conversation, I proposed that to be the most realistic outcome of used in production visual AI with games.

Currently going for a week without even opening Youtube or Twitch. Day 4 so far and I feel more motivation, focus and patience with art. Can recommend.

Closures are never easy indeed. I'm afraid we don't even hear about independent studio closures, as they happen. Just when it's under Meta, everyone is talking about it. Competition is needed, indeed. Hard to compete with underpriced hardware though. But AVP for example, is not even a competition - it's a significant failure of understanding the market and XR UX. There are many Meta haters, so yeah, it's a hot topic. But hating - is unproductive. And there are many things to praise them for.

Meta has been instrumental to the growth of VR, nobody is questioning that. But they also did a lot of harm to that growth in the past few years. And the way they have been treating some developers behind closed doors has not been easy to stomach to be honest. And all the layoffs + instability of the software is also not something that I’m being happy about tbh. I get it that we all have our favorite platforms to build upon but you can’t say that Meta is still the main driver of growth today and expect people to say nothing 😄 They are being challenged by Apple, Google lately and it has been very good to the whole industry. I have very good friends working for Meta and these layoffs and new structure might actually be what’s needed for Meta to evolve in the right direction but I’m still skeptical about their global strategy in VR. Wearables is another topic entirely though.

@EinarJohnson_XR @tom_krikorian The work these studios did under Meta doesn't count? Its positive sum. Without Meta's VR market, these studios would not even exist.

@mrmaxm @tom_krikorian Last month META laid off around 1500 employees across three separate VR studios which they closed. To me, that was pushing things back in VR development.

It's not popular to recognize Meta's work, indeed. Much easier to be a hater like the most. But we would not have XR industry as it is if not them. We would have a very fragmented market, with a small but dedicated PCVR group. But that would be only a small fraction of what industry is today.

@gamefromscratch I love how the weighted randomizer in this game keeps it always: "very close". There are a couple of encounters which are way worse than others. I assume they will balance it out later.

@mrmaxm Yeah, same here. Think I've made it to his 3rd phase every time, but then he just scales up way too much and hits way too hard. Meanwhile you're dealing with x number of bleeds and other debuff cards.

Software distribution is messed up. I don't want to compile the same thing for multiple OSs. It'd be nice if we could compile a portable IR that runs on a VM (like Java, C#), and if users want highest performance, they can compile the IR to native executable, on their machine.

To me, there are only few modern languages that can be called simple: Odin, Austral, OCaml, Scheme, Lua, C3, and Go. Most other widely loved / used languages like Rust, Zig, C++ etc. are fairly complex. Now the dilemma is: Users seem to prefer the complex languages more. Why?
