@WillManidis the same is true for a lot of white-collar work imo.. consulting, legal services, investment banking etc.

a very smart friend has a riff that the only reason people spend huge amounts on software is to buy the most desirable but outwardly illegible trait of the vendor. ex: you buy palantir because great secrets exist, you buy openai because insane revenue acceleration is possible.

being a founder is just about complaining about shipping velocity until giving up and begrudgingly admitting the poolside PMs deserved their salaries

Lack of imagination isn't what's stopping it. It's that anyone who's actually managed engineers knows commit counts and PR velocity are garbage proxies for impact. The best engineer on my team sometimes ships zero code for a week because they're unblocking four other people in design reviews. An LLM stack-ranking from git logs would systematically punish exactly the people you want to keep.

Feels like the pin is about to drop in software engineering. Right now VP’s can ask an llm “look at all my employees contributions and stack rank them” and the only reason this hasn’t happened is lack of imagination

Everything clicked once I realized it doesn’t matter how much weight you lift in the gym. What actually matters is your proximity to mechanical failure. This is what makes supersets incredibly effective.

ramp is proof you don't need to be in sf to attract elite young talent. expense management company in nyc at 1500 headcount quietly stacking some of the smartest people i've seen. makes you think. @eglyman so curious how?

@mrmoosby If you’re from my vintage, you understand the historical significance of Rome and Canada. They were BIG tourneys in the 70s and 80s.
