I'll never understand why anyone would want to replace design discovery with AI. "I need you to create me a moodboard for this [insert brief]." You're getting such a clinical and airtight snapshot of what AI thinks is right for the project. There's beauty in falling into the rabbit hole of Cosmos, Pinterest, or whatever you use for inspiration and finding styles that you would never have considered could work, but they do. Why would you rob yourself of all this cool exploration? There's a place for AI, product and brand photography comes first to my mind (if the client doesn't have a budget). But we all got into design to explore, push creative boundaries and make something super cool. AI should never replace creativity, ever.

every time art and technology collide, it gets uncomfortable. photography, cgi, nfts. now it’s ai. inevitably, the people who lean in early, long before it’s fully accepted, are the ones who end up shaping what comes next. doodles was born out of this exact contention. we aim to do it again. when we decided to build Doodles AI, we built it as a first-party tool. trained exclusively on ip we own, on a visual language i’ve spent my entire career formulating. the goal was speed, but even more so, relevance. the ability to participate in culture in real time. because that’s what true internet-native brands should all be striving for. we’ve been running it internally for a while now, and the impact is tangible: more viral posts, more growth, more attention. but it was too powerful, too satisfying, and too fun to not share it widely. a strong ip doesn’t weaken when you open it up. it gets rediscovered from angles you couldn’t have planned for, by people you never would’ve reached. creativity has always had gatekeepers. skill. time. access. often, it’s a game of privilege. plenty of people have taste and vision but just don’t have the tools to match it. i’m proud to contribute my life’s work to this new era of co-authorship, with a singular style as the galvanizer. the best way to predict the future is to invent today.

A Letterboxd redesign concept I made for fun became trending and some reactions went way too far. For a community that celebrates bold artistic choices in film every day, the reaction to a bold design choice was surprisingly hostile. Critique is welcome, always. I learn from it. But a lot of what I received went far beyond that and had nothing to do with design at all. Hostility and threats over a UI concept are never acceptable. Please keep in mind that there’s a real person behind the screen before hitting send. This experience won’t stop me. I’ll keep creating, experimenting, and putting my work out there, because that’s the whole point 🩶 Lots of love, tom
