Part of working in higher ed is the very odd task of handing students back things that already belong to them by right. The special collections. The freedom to explore. History. Language. Physical objects.

Once a semester I take my students to Special Collections and Archives, where they get to see a telegram from Civil Rights activist Medgar Evers. They really like to touch that one, and they're allowed (with clean hands). They still touch it *as though* they're not allowed.
