DO sweat the small stuff. The difference between a good writer and a great writer means they do things like:
-Spell the client’s name correctly
-Spell words consistently
-Use correct punctuation and spacing
-Use spell check when completed
-Follow all instructions in the brief

For every billion in valuation, a tech co should spend a few million on original content, with their own editor-in-chief. Not on PR; that’s just an interface to legacy media corporations. Tell your own story, it’s your defense budget. Bloomberg isn’t Bloomberg without Bloomberg.

@kaleighf Short, recorded interviews are key for ghostwriting for me because you can do a bit of story coaching as you go and end up with a really clear piece of content to use for articles, social media posts, etc.

For people who feel REALLY intimidated/blocked when it comes to getting words written down:
-Do a voice memo
-Send it to a ghostwriter
-Have them create a first draft based on audio/transcript
Boom. You've got something to work with.

i pitched a story about how journalism schools are failing students by not teaching any of the basics of freelancing to all the major media publications and not one wanted it.
so... who wants it? i think it’s an essential aspect of how this industry is failing young journos!

Yes! I clearly remember asking my professors if they had freelance advice to give me and they all just sort of shrugged. Their experiences were from a time when you were on staff or nothing, buy that’s not how it’s worked for a looonnng time.

i've spoken with a dozen freelance journalists like myself who went to j-school and every single one said there was little to no freelance education in their school's curriculum. it's almost as if talking about the possibility of freelancing after graduation is taboo.
