Just 4km off the coast of Portrane, Dublin lies Lambay Island. This 600-acre wild, private isle is home to a few humans, a working farm, cows, deer and a troupe of Rednecks. But these are lad's of a different stripe, these are Red-Necked Wallabies!
The way these Aussie and Tasmanian natives made it to Lambay is as interesting as the story of the isle itself. The Barings banking dynasty bought Lambay in 1904. They built a manor house, follies and a farm.
The lads tried to turn the place in to a bit of a menagerie during the 1950s-60's, however these charming marsupials were the only exotic blow-ins that stuck around. At the moment Lambay's head honcho is Baron Revelstoke, who lives in a quaint castle on the island and is apparently a really nice bloke.
The collective noun for wallabies is a 'mob'. The thriving colony received 7 new islanders when Dublin Zoo rehomed some of their own overpopulated troupe to Lambay in the 1980's.
So what's the difference between a kangaroo and a wallaby? Well, the answer is biologically not very much. They're both marsupials, but Kangaroos are much bigger, they can easily grow to human size and weight.
Wallabies are seldom taller than a metre and have a correspondingly lower weight. Wallabies' habitat is forests with sufficient cover and close food sources. Whereas a kangaroo's bigger frame and longer legs let's it live across large open places.
A weather-beaten island in the Irish Sea may not initially sound like a perfect sanctuary for Wallabies but the thick, fertile vegetation and lack of predators provides a safe ecosystem. In fact, the cooler climate has stimulated the charming nocturnal beasts to grow thicker coats.
But to ensure their comfort in the Winter the herbivores are treated to shelter and hay, along with their fellow more domesticated animals. Overall, apart from health monitoring, seasonal assistance and culling they are allowed comfortably fend for themselves. The healthy population size is between 60 and 80.
Apparently you can visit and even stay over. Isolated island paradise, friendly wildlife and no Wi-fi...sounds like heaven to me. If I get to visit I'm bringing a wallaby costume to change in to and going native for the summer!

A simple "Bonjour" + "s'il vous plaît" + "merci" works miracles.
Your Parisian waiter is not "having a bad day." That's just his face. He's probably thinking about Sartre.
Lower your voice, raise your manners, and kill the 'how ya doin' energy. The French aren't rude - they're just not running a theme park for extroverts.
Leave the baseball cap and fanny pack at the hotel.
Learn five phrases.
Walk like you have nowhere to be. Because you don't. The Louvre isn’t running away.
Skip the beret and la Tour Eiffel.
Don't expect dinner at 5:30pm or free refills on soda. Order the house wine instead.
No athletic shorts in the Louvre. Dress like you respect the place that invented style.
For the love of all that's holy, don't rush. Sit in a café, watch the world go by, and pretend you're not checking your phone every 47 seconds.
Truth: France rewards the respectful and the patient, once you meet them halfway.

@legal_scottmary @ithacarising Mills over taken by steam . Horse and cart over taken by trains . Modern life moves on . Governments have to move with the times . . We can't live in the stone age if the rest of the world surpaases us . and world war kinda erased a lot of old euro cities .
English

@murticus @ithacarising Actually quite a lot of European cities had large medieval centres up until the mid 40s. Paris wasn't touched. They had mills all around Montmartre. Ironically the Moulin rouge is the only reminder of this.
English

@legal_scottmary @ithacarising True , but the renovation of the city helped clean and sanitise the city. . Very few large European cities retain a large medieval area. Dublin only has a small part left .
English

@murticus @ithacarising Unlike most cities Paris obliterated its medieval centre to build all those avenues so it's a completely designed city.
English

@legal_scottmary @ithacarising Yeah true . Some parts like seine saint Denis are rough . But most tourists don't see that ,same as any large city. But tbh ,the facade is astonishing.
English

@murticus @ithacarising Paris is beautiful once you don't look beyond the facade.

@conorcoleary There is no carbon tax on commercial aviation fuel in Ireland.

You'd wonder why they dont just drop the carbon tax from aviation fuel? To be fair, planes have no alternative to this fuel.... unlike tractors!
