An excellent thread here from @mara_yamauchi. I truly admire her perseverance on this issue in the face of parkrun's continued failure to acknowledge that women matter too. Hopefully the perseverance pays off soon 🤞

My thoughts on @parkrun founder Paul Sinton-Hewitt’s comments in this interview.👇 1. It’s good that he is openly admitting what he previously called “the gender thing” is a problem. But parkrun has had years to fix it. I met the previous CEO in June 2023. Since then,…

@natsrambles @hall_ej @jamesdavis6939 I’m not expecting it to be policed. As parkrun has decided to provide rankings based on categorizing people, I expect their policies to support these being fair/meaningful. That’s all

@mytinss @hall_ej @jamesdavis6939 But you keep missing the point. Its not competitive, you cannot police it, should not police it. Its about YOU taking offence because a trans woman might be in the event. If you do not like their rules, move on. The EA does not apply at all to a mixed sex event.

No one polices the age category either and yet everyone seems able to self-police and provide their correct DOB. What is it about men who pretend they're women that makes you think they're dishonest?
Natalie Wright 📷🌸🏍️@natsrambles

Its a mixed sex fun event. What box participants tick on signup cant be policed. EA2010 does not even cover this as not single sex, mums with toddlers enter with grandpas and dog walkers. You race against yourself for a personal bests. Deal with it or go enter a professional race

@hall_ej @jamesdavis6939 @natsrambles 100%. IMO if all parkrun does is acknowledge that its current methods of ranking are not meaningful/fair for females and does something about it, that’s good enough for me. parkrun events are fully anonymous and that’s fine

@natsrambles I just want Parkrun to signal, via its policy, that fairness for women is equally important as fairness for men. IDGAS whether it's a pro event or not. Strava lets men hold "QOM" titles and boot people who complain off the platform - which is even more galling than Parkrun tbh.

@gingerneilnc @HallisseyC I ask parkrun to recognize that IF they continue to rank people based on categories that their policy needs to support them being meaningful and fair. If they recognise that and make a change in line with that, I’d be happy.

Some people seem to think it's OK to keep the gender categories at parkrun because 'it's not competitive' and 'it's not hurting anyone'. These are lies. It is competitive as long as it publishes ranked category results. It hurts any woman who cares about getting a fair result.

@gingerneilnc @HallisseyC I cannot control what others might do. As a woman who others might think at a glance ‘looks like a bloke’ I appreciate your concern. I still ask parkrun to recognize that IF they rank people by category, their policy needs to support them being fair and meaningful. That’s it

@mytinss @HallisseyC lol. When mara posts about individuals every week, stalking them through the results. You really think she wont start writing 'formal' letters demanding that 'rule breakers' are banned? And what happens if a random person complains that someone looked a bit 'like a bloke' ?

@gingerneilnc @HallisseyC No one is asking for enforcement. parkrun is completely anonymous. I just expect the parkrun policy, IF they continue to rank people by category, to support those rankings being fair and meaningful. No impact on event day at all

@HallisseyC Or the counter position... Some people seem to think it's OK to demand parkrun enforce sex categories because its a competition. This is a lie. It is expressly not competitive and only publishes results to allow participation analysis and personal tracking. It hurts nobody.

Everyone deserves to feel safe in public life. But the growing threat of legal action against trans‑inclusive organisations risks silencing the very groups working to make that possible. I’ve raised this urgently with the Culture Secretary, pressing for clarity on how the Government will support inclusive organisations in this uncertain climate.

Regarding Tom Steyer's position on trans athletes: I think he's right on the merits. ELITE sports need to be sex segregated. But people make up reasons to claim that competitive fairness of youth sports is super-important and it isn't. Plus, there's enforcement problems.

@leonfleming @Martina @PeterTatchell As a masc lesbian who knows a lot of lesbians I know thats not happened to me or anyone I know but I can absolutely believe it could happen. Thats cos some people in society think all women are/should be feminine. That’s the thing to fix, not turning everything unisex

@Martina @PeterTatchell You're very lucky then, because I know lesbians who have been physically dragged out of toilets because other women thought that they were men. You've not only contributed to making toilets more dangerous for trans women, but for trans men and cis women as well. You're a danger.

Toilets & changing rooms must be used on basis of biological sex, new guidance says How will this be policed? It's impossible! Already biological women who are deemed insufficiently feminine are being falsely accused of being trans & harassed. SHAME! bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

Does anyone have a sensible explanation for the parkrun gender categories? I understand they allow us to view results by gender, but why is there a requirement for that? Why gender over the countless other characteristics that we could be categorised by? Make it make sense!
Claire Hallissey@HallisseyC

@JennyAscendant @mara_yamauchi Or maybe somebody can explain why they think parkrun needs gender categories and results. I've quite clearly explained why I think there should be sex categories if results are published. A parkrun without categories or results would surely be completely inclusive?

I've just finished a morning interval session. That's the reason I'm still able to 'battle' for 1st lady at parkrun. I wasn't magically born an Olympian, I worked hard to get there. I was, however, born a woman. #makeparkrunfairforall #inclusivity

@sharrond62 @DailyMail @TracyEdwardsMBE 100% this. That they currently rank runners based on their gender/age suggests that gender is a meaningful measure of performance. Under their current definition of ‘gender’ it isn’t. Either scrap ranking by category or change the definition to gender = sex

A little bit of a shame that the mail didn’t check that Parkrun issues times & places in categories & self id which is not Uk law. Remove categories & times or bring back correct categories & records, & I have zero issue either way. But not half way house where women lose out on correct places.

@sharrond62 @parkrunUK I’m a big fan of parkrun. I’ve run > 100 and could list many positive things about it. However, as long as they have a policy which invites people to register in whatever ‘gender category’ they wish AND use these categories to rank people, it’ll continue to be unfair to females

There’s not a single category that females can run in free from men in @parkrunUK they have been given tax payers money to grow female participation! Maybe that’s how they cheat the results Adding men! Pure sex discrimination Women & girl are massively under represented in sport
