The maker journey. You either make alone, or with limited resources from like minded folks or you learn how power works.

Idealism is the currency that powers your maturation. You wouldn't throw yourself against just any rock. Only an ideal rock.
The irreversible change is that you can see the outside of the bubble as the current equilibrium of bubbles crashing into bubbles.

But coming back to my point, makers who try to build bubbles within which idealism can be expressed will be irreversibly changed by the process. This is often framed as 'learning to compromise' but I don't think that's a good framing.
