@conor64 The assumption that there are no unjust laws ("Crime is always an injustice") seems a bit problematic

My best attempt at an explanation for this: the class of people who wield disproportionate influence over how social justice is defined are relatively privileged along the metric *disproportionately likely/unlikely to be victims of crime.* Recommended reading: Jill Leovy.
Sarah Haider 👾@SarahTheHaider

It’s so weird to see the co-option of “justice” as a value by the very people who make excuses for rising crime. Crime, by its very nature, is an injustice—one that disproportionately plagues the most disadvantaged among us. Cracking down on crime *is* social justice.

We’re several days past the discovery of this bamboozlement, but some of the country’s top political reporters have nevertheless chosen to go along with the ruse rather than admit error. A rookie reporter who refused to correct factual mistakes like this would be fired.
southpaw@nycsouthpaw

The @nytimes should correct this false assertion by @peterbakernyt. Trump held a rally at a non-union shop in Michigan and did not voice any endorsement of the UAW’s strike. Biden joined the UAW on the picket line. nytimes.com/2023/09/28/us/…

This is a perfect encapsulation of our family-unfriendly culture. We have transformed parenthood from a natural part of adulthood into another consumption choice. Thus people believe society has no responsibility to promote and support family-formation.

NEWS: The Fifth Circuit panel in the social-media case realized they didn't really do law yesterday, looked at their own rules, and did a do-over. DOJ also filed a memo at #SCOTUS this morning. I've added an update at Law Dork explaining what's happening: lawdork.com/i/137402654/so…

Here's the ATF form that Trump would have to have filled out to purchase a firearm. Notably, he would have to attest that he is not under felony indictment and not using or addicted to drugs (Hunter Biden case) atf.gov/firearms/docs/…
Jonathan Allen@jonallendc

Trump bought a Glock in South Carolina, according to his spokesman. Federal law bans people under federal felony indictment from buying guns. BUT, federal judges, citing recent SCOTUS rulings, have said it's not consistent with the Constitution. nbcnews.com/politics/supre…

@mattyglesias It's a shift from power tied to labor to power tied to capital - obscuring decision making is part of the point

Though labor unions occasionally push ideas I dislike, they always care about winning races to obtain tangible power. Shifting the center of gravity in progressive politics to foundations and vanity projects has led to much fuzzier decision-making.

@EricLevitz Or white working class people become Republicans due to them being the party of white nationalism and adjusting economic views

I suspect that the causal chain here is: socially conservative working-class voters become Republicans as culture war issues gain salience —> they adjust their economic views to match their partisanship (while socially liberal college grads took the opposite journey)

College-educated voters now express more liberal views than working-class voters on economics (I.e. on questions of taxation, social insurance, redistribution and government intervention in the economy)
Will Marble@wpmarble

The white working class has steadily become part of the Republican base while whites w/ college degrees have become Democratic. In a new paper, I study the issue basis of this realignment, showing that both economic and cultural issues have contributed. williammarble.co/docs/EducPolar…

@EricLevitz The paper and claims from it that were tweeted seem to be focused on white working class voters vs white college educated. Is there evidence for your claim that this is something that applies more generally to working class vs college educated?

@mattyglesias So it's unseemly to point out that the media is lying bc they are only doing it to make money. What is the seemly thing to do in this situation? Pretend media coverage is honest?

Whining about media coverage is unseemly — on some level there’s no sense complaining that for-profit business enterprises make decisions that are good for business — but people should say plainly what’s up. nytimes.com/2022/08/11/bus…

I think a relevant lens for understanding coverage choices is that it’s better for clicks, subscriptions, ratings, etc if Trump wins again and it’s more fun to cover him if you pretend not to know how he’s governed and will govern.

@gelliottmorris OK, but there are answers for why people think that, which are largely independent of actual economic circumstances. Look at the disconnect between left and right depending on who is Pres, for example

sorry to keep harping on this. perhaps on more tweet: if the economy is doing well on paper but a majority of people think we’re in a recession, the response shouldn’t be “lol, these fucking idiots” it should be “why do people think this?”

IMO a big problem in many corners of the economy discourse is we’ve got a bunch of shape rotators arguing about the first derivative on annual timescales, meanwhile families have memories more than year old and notice a substantial reduction in buying power at the grocery store
David H. Montgomery@dhmontgomery

There's a lot going on here, but I think a big part of it is that, beyond just inflation, experts tend to focus on rates of change/acceleration (more *meaningful*), while laypeople are much more comfortable at lower rungs of the derivative ladder (raw values are more *impactful*)

The Fifth Circuit Court has now held that it's unconstitutional for the federal govt to influence platforms' moderation decisions, while also holding it's constitutional for Texas to compel platforms to leave up content they want to take down. Impossible to square that circle.
