Here are some trends I've been talking about for a couple years now, which VC is catching on to (with some mega funding rounds): - AI and materials science will revolutionize every engineering discipline, because the space of material science is extremely vast and unexplored but material properties limit all areas of engineering performance. - Energy extrapolations on scaling AI to the world / getting AGI are all completely wrong because new computing substrates and model architectures will be many orders of magnitude more efficient (human brains run on 20 watts for example). Analog, neuromorphic, reversible, thermodynamic, etc, are all key words to watch. - Biotech and synthetic bio is extremely under-indexed on today. We view biotech in the lens of 'therapeutics' because this is the highest value early use-case, but biotech IS 'nanotech' - self replicating molecular factories. Eventually synbio will extend into every facet of industry, manufacturing, etc. A building that heals itself. Flying cats. whatever. - Energy is ultimately the best commodity to back currency. Currency is already energy once-removed. - Hydrocarbons are miraculous and will likely be used in large amounts for many decades to come to power industrial society. There will never be a battery powered jet fighter, for example, let alone commercial jet aircraft. Synthetic hydrocarbons will make this carbon-neutral and wildly abundant. - Free space optical laser links will undo the downlink bottleneck for space-based assets - Drone defense will always come down to cost-per-shot. Directed energy weapons will be the cost-floor. - Understanding of the human bio-electric field will bring into scientific discourse many long-held 'woo' beliefs around 'energy', qi, fields, awareness, experience, health, longevity, cancer, etc. We index everything on genetics first, proteomics second, and electromagnetics not at all. We will need to revisit our own EM environments. - Robots and AI agents will need to transact on blockchains to be autonomous economic agents. - Zeppelins make economic sense and are awesome and will be everywhere in due time. Less actionable insights but still relevant to worldview: - Civilization is way older than we think - The climate isn't going to kill us - The world is simpler if you acknowledge some people are evil and want to destroy western civilization for their own reasons. idk there's probably more stuck in my head somewhere so ask questions and I can answer them.
