AFTERNOON MAJOR WINTER STORM UPDATE 1/20
Confidence increasing on a long duration Winter storm starting Friday to the West & ending Monday for the Eastern end. This has the potential to be a 24-48 hour event for many areas. Below is the 12z Euro, GFS, GFS AI & Euro AI for Sunday morning.
Has anything changed? Nothing worth really calling a trend. 3 out of the 4 models you see below are pretty amped meaning it's beefed up with a lot of moisture. This is due to the ejection of a Baja low out West that will create stronger storm opportunity BUT it will also bring a lot of warm air advection with it. What means it'll warm up the upper levels of the atmosphere bringing a warm nose of air above the surface. This is why you see so much pink & purple & orange on your screen (That's freezing rain/sleet). Plenty cold at the surface for snow, but not above the surface for many. A larger system would also give areas further North a chance at significant snow.
Then you got the ole GFS. To sum up the GFS, it really doesn't get the Baja low going & it's just a massive overrunning event. It eventually swings some energy from it through extending the duration of the event. It doesn't show the amped up scenario, therefore it doesn't nuke the upper levels as much with warm air. To sum up all that nerding out stuff, it's a colder & more flat West to East look that brings more snow in areas that are showing a ton of ice off the other runs. Fans of Winter weather further North won't like that run, fans of Winter weather further to the South will. Regardless, we are all trying to avoid a huge ice storm here.. but someone is going to get it.
It's hard to imagine this amps up to much even if the low fully swings through due to such an intense Arctic high, but we will see.
@WalletHacks I wish I had a better answer, but it just felt like the right time. I have a few updates and thoughts to share. We'll see where it goes from there.

Can we give a slow clap to Jacob @iHeartBudgets? I don't even know how he pulled it together so fast, but he has compiled a huge list of financial programs for those affected by coronavirus, including school lunches, mortgage relief, and credit card aid. iheartbudgets.net/covid19-financ…
Even though I hate waking up early I made an appointment for 7am to get my recall repair.
Anyone else have an obsession with getting the first appointment and getting errands done early?
