USSS Spokesperson: Shortly after 6:00 p.m. Saturday, an individual approached a Secret Service checkpoint in the area of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW. A preliminary investigation indicates that as the individual approached, he removed a weapon from his bag and began firing at posted officers. Secret Service police officers returned fire, striking the suspect, who was transported to an area hospital, where he later died. During the shooting, a bystander was also struck by gunfire. It remains unclear whether the bystander was struck by the suspect’s initial gunfire or during the subsequent exchange of gunfire. No injuries were sustained by Secret Service personnel. The President was at the White House during the incident but was not impacted. The incident remains under investigation.

@Gen_X7777 In the 1920s-1930s the average mean temperature around Manila at this time of year was in the higher 20s Celsius. You could look it up online. There are historical records going back to the late 1800s. We're presently dealing with what's known as urban heat island effect.

#SciFeature 𝗝𝗨𝗦𝗧 𝗛𝗢𝗪 𝗛𝗢𝗧 𝗜𝗦 𝗠𝗘𝗧𝗥𝗢 𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗜𝗟𝗔? 🥵 Can you feel the urban heat? Here’s a snapshot of satellite-derived land surface temperatures across Metro Manila and nearby areas last April. What patterns stand out to you? The map reveals a striking thermal contrast. Deep red zones highlight densely built urban centers where land surface temperatures can exceed 40 °C and, in extreme hotspots, approach ~70 °C. In contrast, bluish-green areas indicate cooler surfaces, typically associated with vegetation, water bodies, or less-developed land. A few scattered patches appear cooler as well, but these are likely cloud cover rather than ground readings. The pattern is clear: Metro Manila’s urban core is significantly hotter than its surrounding suburbs and greener outskirts. This is a classic example of the urban heat island effect, where concrete, asphalt, and dense infrastructure absorb and re-radiate heat throughout the day and night, while limited tree cover reduces natural cooling through shade and evapotranspiration. As cities continue to expand, additional heat from vehicles, buildings, and industrial activity further intensifies local temperatures. These elevated surface temperatures can increase energy demand, worsen heat stress, and raise health risks, especially for elderly and low-income communities. #TagInit2026 #urbanheatisland #MetroManila

These conditions are inhumane and we have to live like this. The bourgeoisie lives in tree-covered gated communities. For the rest of us what few trees that give us shade get cut down to make way for the highway projects that only benefit the SUV-owning elite.

CBS News Radio is shutting down tonight after nearly a century on the air. The storied service started in 1927 and gave rise to such icons as Douglas Edwards, Walter Cronkite and Edward R. Murrow. Together, they and their colleagues brought history into our homes: From the liberation of Nazi camps in Germany, to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, to the deadliest attack on American soil, 9/11. The company announced the closure in March, blaming what it called "challenging economic realities." To borrow Mr. Murrow's famous phrase, we wish everyone at CBS News Radio one final "Good night, and good luck."

FBI is on the scene and Secret Service is responding to shots near the White House grounds. The President is currently at the White House. I was in the middle of taping from the White House North Lawn when I heard what sounded like dozens of gunshots fired nearby. We immediately got down then heard yelling for us to evacuate to the briefing room. All the reporters on the north lawn sprinted over @ABC
