Not the same thing. The Harriers were great, but they were jet fuel hogs and could hold hover for very short periods. The F-35 uses a fan (not an engine) in the compartment behind the cockpit, along with nozzles in key locations such as wing tips to control attitude. Not to mention the stealth and other characteristics. The F-35 is a MASSIVE technology leap over the poor old harrier.
