Why do sites completely lose Google Discover traffic? here are few reason, and solutions, I personally came across. Let me know if you know any others: 1. Slow/Very Slow mobile pages - remember Google Discover is mobile product >> enhance TTFB 2. Site removed from Top Stories, site is no longer considered a news source - mainly applies to news publishers >> Investigate why site is removed according to Google News guidelines 3. Site got hit by a Google Algo / Core update, and/or the majority of content is deemed "unhelpful" content - sitewide ranking demotion >> address low quality content 4. Site has a lot of unsafe "adult" NSFW content/images - triggered by safe search filter in Google Search >> move NSFW content to a subdomain 5. Crawling/Technical issues with site - you will see this in GSC as well >> fix crawling issues, ensure sitemaps are working, make sure you have good internal linking system 6. Low EEAT - EEAT is now part of Google Discover >> Enhance EEAT for brand and authors 7. Site content is extremely seasonal or evergreen - lack of new fresh content >> Users' interest do shift frequently, make sure to have content that address different seasons on the year. Investigate the option to write new fresh content focused on news and top trends that are relevant to your niche. 8. Low buzz around site content - in 2021 I made multiple studies that show social buzz around site content impacts Google discover >> work with social media teams and authors on a sharing policy of newly published content 9. Site content is thin and extremely focused on Discover, which starts hurting its search potential which lead to drop in Google Discover >> write for users and focus primarily on search, discover traffic is byproduct 10. Google Discover content policy violations especially around click-baity outrageous content >> check if you stories deliver on headlines promises, misleading titles or manipulated images that provide false assumptions 11. Bad/poor user experience especially around ads >> check if your ads interrupt/disrupts user experience #GoogleDiscover via gddash.com

Many publishers and News SEOs were concerned with the news of Google removing the News Filter/tab from search results. Google has confirmed that the test has finished and they have no plans of removing the filter. Based on @newzdash data below, News Tab traffic is minimal and doesn't account to any significant traffic. There are 4 news surfaces within Google; Top Stories (News Box within SERPs), Google News (news.google.com), Google Discover, and News Tab/Filter. News Tab constitute a very small portion of the Google traffic to any news publisher; less than 2% of Google's traffic to the majority of publishers. Analyzing GDdash.com 936M clicks over the last 90 days for 122 publishers, News Tab Traffic is 1.6% of total Google Clicks. BTW, Google News is 6.4% and Google Discover is 48%, which means 45% of Google traffic is Web (including Top Stories, Images, Videos, and other tabs). So Calm Down and Keep SEOing :) * chart data below is from April 2023 and only include Google News Surfaces. #NewsSEO #GoogleNews
