This is what I did to survive after losing my son. I made a decision early on that whatever I did, whether I was happy or falling apart, he wasn’t coming back, so I chose to live and to do something in his name. I took the pain I had and turned it into a purpose. I went to the gym, gave up alcohol, sought therapy and still go once a month, because I knew I couldn’t carry it all on my own. I decided to honour him by putting my body through endurance events 6 marathons, 6 mountains and 110km walks later, all of it driven by a need to channel grief into something meaningful. And somewhere along the way, I found solace in helping others. I put that pain into action, setting up a charity as his legacy, It’s Never You, with my wife. It started fast, like a racehorse, but I wanted to go further, so I met with an MP and asked how we could change things for parents in the future. From my kitchen table I wrote a policy, and we put it forward as a Private Members’ Bill. It got pulled, then the election came and we lost it all. So I picked myself up and went again. Now, three years on, we have two government reviews set to start in the coming months: two pieces of policy that will change how parents are treated when their child is seriously ill, both on money and mental health, both carrying Hugh’s name. Along the way I’ve made new friends, lost old ones, focused on what would make me better and cut the noise out of my life. I’ve learned not to be afraid to ask for help and to keep learning. What started as pain has become a campaign that’s reached all corners of the globe, all in three years, all because the person who made me a dad, who made me the happiest I’ve ever been, is no longer here. We aren’t supposed to lose our children. People will tell you that you’ll never get over it and they’re right. You don’t. But it’s the in-between that you can change. What you do with the days, the pain, the love, the grief, and the purpose that’s still left in you. That’s where the choice is. And that’s what carries you forward, until the day you see them again. Dine-dashers who ran up a £540 bill at a steakhouse and then legged it without paying are being hunted by police. A group of people enjoyed a slap-up meal at Miller & Carter in Kettering on April 6 between 5pm and 7.10pm before calmly walking out leaving the £539.70 tab unpaid. Northamptonshire Police have now released CCTV images of the suspects and are appealing for anyone who recognises them to come forward. It’s the second time in weeks the same branch has been hit by dine-and-dashers. Anyone with information should call police on 101 quoting incident number 26000213409.
