Thoughts with @PSOSDogs Thoughts with Police Scotland dog handler and their team for the sad loss of PD Zara Zara joined police Scotland in October 2023 and, in her short time with her handler , was loved very much. Zara was sadly hit by a car whilst exercising off duty after she bolted chasing a rabbit Zara suffered a broken pelvis, and the force decided with costly veterinary bills and potential long recovery periods. The kindest act was to let Zara cross the rainbow bridge A spokesperson stated She was assessed by a vet who said she could recover and return to duty. But the police force decided the £12,000 surgery was too much. They claimed animal welfare was a priority, but it sure doesn’t feel that way. Sadly the police force doesn't have the veterinary support like the military does and expenses like veterinary bills, welfare and equipment fall to the individual forces budgets and under individual local civilian veterinary teams in the individual forces locations. Believe when I say the decision will never come from a handler or their team to Euthanise our dogs, and they will do all in their power to keep them safe With over 3000 TPDs, PDs, and retiring PDs over the UK its a area often stretched, making some decisions made on budgets and numbers. Many failed training police dogs face no support post service even from some forces' charities. We at hero paws standby any forces dog whether they have attempted to serve a day or 10 years. I had to say goodbye to my beautiful Pippa 10 days ago. 15yrs of magical friendship and love. She will always be with me. I am devastated and a bit lost. Her light guides my spirit. She was the most beautiful hooligan and I miss her desperately.
