Now, when the Iranian people face mass atrocities, you invoke those same difficulties to reject force. If humanitarian principles were not just political weapons for you, this would be easy to answer: why was force justified for Syrians, yet categorically rejected for Iranians facing massacre by the brutal regime in Iran?

The true national flag of Iran is the Lion and Sun — a historic symbol with centuries of heritage and identity behind it — not the ideological flag of the Islamic Republic with the name of Allah in its center. To those around the world: understand the current regime’s flag the same way you understand other ideological symbols throughout history, such as the communist hammer and sickle that replaced the national flags of occupied nations. Ideological regimes often replace the historical identity of a people with symbols of their ruling doctrine. FIFA plans to again prohibit fans from bringing pre-revolutionary Iranian flags and related apparel into World Cup stadiums, The Athletic reported. The flag, featuring the lion and sun emblem used before the 1979 revolution, is widely displayed by members of the Iranian diaspora as a symbol of identity and protest against Iran’s government. When asked by The Athletic whether the flags or related apparel would be allowed at venues during the 2026 tournament, FIFA responded by referring to its stadium code of conduct banning political or discriminatory materials.
