@TheStalwart YES agree!! Also, AI is a database built on human writing samples, so... Also, taste matters -- so say I love John Cheever's and hate Ayn Rand's writing -- so I am going to hate both real Rand and AI-Rand but I may like both real and AI Cheever, esp as AI gets better.

I took the AI vs. Human writing quiz at the NYT. I don't think it's a great gauge of the question.. For one thing, people are probably trying to guess which is human, rather than answer honestly. But also I don't think single paragraphs are a good measure of the question.

@TheStalwart Yes, AI writing right now is kinda bad, but let's not pretend that it is not going to improve exponentially (and likely already has with paid versions). If people think their academic papers are "art", then fine, but they are likely to be outpublished by AI-assisted authors.

Why do a lot of software people like a tool that can allow them to expend their mental energy on higher order problems, while writers dislike the tool that can replace their output completely? Truly one of the great mysteries of our time

@TheStalwart They think that writing is an art and not a commodity. It is of course both. And many people that think they are brilliant writers are actually not brilliant writers.

@dollarsanddata To some extent, this is true, but I am increasingly convinced that AI writing is improving exponentially and dramatically with the paid versions. I will still of course do my own writing, but dismissing AI wholesale as 'bad writing' is not likely to be very true for very long.

As someone who codes & writes, the difference is in the kind of output I want for each. With code, I just want the thing to work. I don't care how it works. AI is great at this. With writing, I want the best content I can produce. I care A LOT about the details. AI sucks here.

@Brendan_Duke Women complain about men's profiles and men complain about women's profiles. One of the fun parts of being on the apps was having some of the guys I matched with send me (hilarious) profile pics of my "competition." Your friend is not wrong.

My colleague wrote "add more flares" instead of "add flair" in an email and I will never stop thinking about how amazing this is

No idea who needs to hear this but: You can just wake up one morning & change your whole life. Turn the whole thing around. I did it & I know many others who did it too!! You can do the full reinvention or start with one thing that you know needs changing. Good luck!

I've been struggling lately - I feel a lot like my cup is empty and it's hard to fill it up to a place where I feel like myself right now. But this morning I had a dream that feels like a win: I dreamt I was back teaching and there was a family that didn't like me (spoiler - it was a real family who really didn't like me) and when I woke up I couldn't remember their names. After 25 years, they are no longer taking up space in my brain the way they used to. I feel like that really is a win.

Seriously though. The only thing worse than a 100 year sovereign bond is a 100 year corporate bond.

United is charging $5 more for Aisle seats than Windows. Either they feel the Aisle is inherently worth more, or they think that they can squeeze Aislecels for $5 more while Windowchads remain undefeated
