Let me tell you guys a short story about Dunsin Oyekan. Most of you might not know this.
Grab your 🍿
I started attending COZA in 2011 and it was a beautiful experience while it lasted.
As at then, Bro Dunsin, like we would usually call him, was the Team Lead of Avalanche (COZA’s official choir), he would usually play the guitar, that’s his major, he hardly sang.
He then dropped a very powerful song titled “Who am I / Na you”, he was a guitar lead when he dropped this o, he only sang it in church, when he decides to take the mic…and when Dunsin decides to drop that guitar and take the mic, forget it, anointing will flow.
Nobody had the official song because it wasn’t recorded in the studio or anything, but every COZA member had like a stage recording. If you’ve not heard that song, you should go and look for it with everything you have, maybe check YouTube.
Fast forward to 2012/2013, if memory serves me right, it was Dunsin’s wedding in Ilorin, I was in Unilorin then. The Thursday or Friday before the wedding day, there was a Bachelor’s Eve, this eve was a dedicated church service for him.
Frank Edwards was also present on this day that I’m telling you. It was a concert that was even on every billboard in Ilorin.
You don’t get, one of the biggest choirs in Nigeria, Avalanche, were coming to the local town of Ilorin, including Dunsin Oyekan, Frank Edwards and Senior Pastor, Reverend Biodun Fatoyinbo.
This was a big deal if you know what I mean.
Now to the best part of the whole concert/ministration. Frank Edwards came on stage, then there was Dunsin & his wife-to-be seated, Frank Edwards sang to her, he sang one of the best songs he’s ever written…”Do you really know how beautiful you are, when the Spirit of the Lord lives and dwells in you”. It was a very emotional moment.
After the whole concert, you know the usual church setting, as Pastor shares the grace, people start leaving, while the choir keeps singing.
Avalanche continued to sing but people didn’t leave o, it turned to worship sessions, people didn’t still leave, naso Bro Dunsin collect mic, it’s like everybody was waiting for that moment.
He sang “Na You” which was the biggest song in COZA then, and then there’s a way he sings this song from Vashawn Mitchell “Nobody Greater”, my God!!!!
After like 1 hour I’m not capping, Dunsin was still worshipping, remember I told you he doesn’t minister often, he’s mostly on the guitar (and he’s one of the greatest guitarist you’ll ever see if you didn’t know), but when he does, forget it o, e be like na 2am I reach house for Tanke that night. It was one of the greatest encounters I’ve had with Dunsin, this was 2013.
I was still in COZA when we heard the news that Dunsin was leaving, nobody could believe because Dunsin was part of the people who moved with Pastor Fatoyinbo to Abuja from Ilorin many years before then when COZA was growing, so it shocked the whole Church nationwide.
The rumour was that he was going to start his ministry, people really thought it was like a physical church in Abuja that will compete with COZA, but after many years of following him, I have come to realise his mission in the Body of Christ is way beyond that. Looking back, leaving was a great decision.
The saddest experience was when his wife died, I literally cried when I saw the news because remember, I was part of the Bachelor’s Eve. I remember every moment from that night, I arranged chairs, cleaned the auditorium, I was a worker in church so I was fully involved in that concert. I remembered how Frank Edwards sang to her, it was such a sad experience but he has moved on by the Grace of God.
I wouldn’t say I’m surprised at how far Bro Dunsin has come because I saw that this will happen and more will follow.
Hope you enjoyed the read.
