The Patriarchate cancelled the deal in November 2023. The Israeli developer, accompanied by armed settlers and Israeli police, has continued to attempt to seize the land by force ever since. The Armenian Patriarchate's status as the single most targeted site in the Old City, as documented by the Religious Freedom Data Center, coincides with this ongoing pressure on Patriarchate property, and the two phenomena cannot be separated. The harassment and the land grab are part of the same pattern. What changes with the Ynet report is the audience. For the first time, a major Hebrew-language Israeli outlet has placed the testimony of Armenian residents alongside that of Greek and Latin Christians, alongside hard data on the rising tide of attacks, alongside the words of Israeli interfaith experts who concede that the situation has spiraled. Azerbaijani forces used it as a weapons depot during their brutal siege of Stepanakert in the 1990s. After liberation, Armenians restored the building to its original condition. In 2020, Azerbaijan bombed the cathedral twice without any military necessity. Now, as part of their campaign against Nagorno-Karabakh’s Armenian identity, the Baku regime has changed the building's appearance once more and is calling it “restoration”. It would've include much of historic Western Armenia from the former Ottoman Empire: the vilayets of Erzurum, Bitlis, Van, and parts of Trabzon, etc. Now, in the real historical timeline, isolationists in the US Senate (the spiritual predecessors of MAGAs) overrule the Wilson Admin and refuse to ratify the Treaty of Versailles and other Paris Peace Conference international agreements. So Armenia never goes to the US, and the Turks conquer Western Armenia in the 1919-1923 war. But if the Americans ratify the Paris Peace Conference agreements, and deploy the US Military to Armenia, it's difficult to imagine the Turks prevailing in the way they did.
