Again, this is somebody spreading misinformation about how IMAX actually works. You are not “missing information.” IMAX is an immersive format, and the additional image area is there to extend into your peripheral vision and create that immersion. Treating every difference in framing as though essential visual information has been removed completely misunderstands both the purpose of IMAX and how human vision works. It is not simply about seeing “more picture.” It is about how the image occupies your field of view.

@patternoticerr @JohnnyFocal No there is only about 40 worldwide that show it in the full aspect ratio. The rest of other IMAX cinemas cut the top and bottom part out like in other normal theaters

@JohnnyFocal Also I don’t think people know what the 70mm part means, there are like 1500 IMAX cinemas that will show the movie in the full aspect ratio 70mm just means it’s projected on a large film and results in better image quality

THE ODYSSEY may have just exposed the biggest problem IMAX has. It has a ceiling, and not even one that Christopher Nolan can break. People clearly want 70mm IMAX. The shows are selling out, fans are traveling across the country, and the format has become part of the event. The problem is there are fewer than 40 locations worldwide that can actually play it properly, and IMAX says it can’t simply build more projectors. So after years of telling audiences this is the ONLY way to see movies like THE ODYSSEY, most people are now being asked to settle for the lesser version. And from what I’m seeing, a lot of them aren’t rushing to do that. That is the ceiling. IMAX can sell out Nolan, Coogler, and a handful of event movies, but SUPERGIRL and THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU came and went without making much noise. The brand has never been hotter, the demand is there, and they don’t have the infrastructure to capitalize on it. No wonder they’re looking for a buyer.
