The optimization phase of game development involves making tiny tweaks you suspect are causing major hiccups in the game, and then staring at this for 8 hours a day over and over and scrolling social media on your phone:

@KT_9_10 I used them today to have an ghost enemy fly in circles while in an idle state. I also use sin to have this same ghost enemy hover up and down. Useful stuff!

Learning the basics of trigonometry 🙂 Using angle + distance to get position: x = cos(angle) * distance y = sin(angle) * distance Used this to build a simple orbit system: - Earth orbits the sun - Moon orbits the Earth #gamedev #Godot #shader

@gabefollower How is it made, are devs able to make a game using S2 or only licensed collaborators?

Garry Newman shared that Facepunch finalised the licence agreement with Valve to release projects created on Source2 using S&Box as separate games on Steam, completely royalty-free. The first of these may be "My Summer Cottage", created by Small Fish.

@ZPostFacto Interesting thread! Been diving into hobby development and AI has been a great tool to answer stupid questions I'm afraid to ask in the forum. 🤫

I am curious how well it'd do on some "real work" like the entire Source2 codebase with all of the games we are making using it. We currently don't give any models access to any of our source code, and nobody is doing agent-in-the-loop.

Finally getting around to doing some real vibe coding for a side project. (BSA Troop web site.) Before, my use of AI was just chatting with ChatGPT and cut and pasting responses. I finally installed copilot and have an agent in the loop that can read the repository and edit files.

@BenjiGameDev Altho I do agree with this advice it's interesting how a lot of the mega successful indie games were 5+ year projects and it was often their very first game. I can name a few.

it's easily the #1 piece of gamedev advice and new gamedevs absolutely do *not* want to hear it 😂
Code Monkey@UnityCodeMonkey

My #1 recurring tip to all Unity devs: Make many SMALL games, not one big "dream" game. Every finished project teaches you: - Scope management - Realistic estimates - Real player feedback - What genres actually sell! If you spend 5 years working on a single game, you will only learn those lessons once, whereas if you make 10 games in those 5 years, you will learn 10 TIMES the lessons in the same timeframe! This is the closest thing to a "secret" behind long-term indie success. If you truly desperately want to make massive games then my advice is make them in parts. For example make one small game all about your Combat mechanics, then another small game about your Exploration mechanics and another one all about your clever Building system. Once you've made all 3 of those games, you can analyze what worked and what you could improve in all those individual systems/mechanics and put them all together in one massive game!

@s8box I like that it's an actual physical hydraulic now but I wonder how it'll work for making car suspensions like the old version in gmod worked

@MjTheHunter You at least need to know how to implement the sound files handed to you, which could be a challenge in itself. Good luck!

animating in 3d software is so funny because its like "oh you wanna do cool stuff in source? yeah you gotta learn blender. oh you wanna do cool stuff in unreal? yeah you gotta learn maya. oh you wanna do cool stuff in blender? yeah you gotta download an older version of blender."

@s8box Is this possible to create a closed-source, for-profit game with it without paying any royalties? It seems that s&box depends on source2 which itself is not free
