Purely from a tactical standpoint, South Africa possesses the quality to frustrate Mexico today. The Bafana Bafana squad is built on a cohesive core with extensive high-level experience on the African continent, making them dangerous underdogs. ​While continental pressure on South Africa is intense, the immense burden on Mexico as co-hosts could work in the visitors' favor if they exploit the early tension. A member of the Ikhaya Labafundi faith mission says she rejected an opportunity to study medicine in Cuba because of Jesus Christ. Another member rejects the notion that the mission is a cult. I condemn today’s military escalation in the Middle East. The use of force by the United States & Israel against Iran, and the subsequent retaliation by Iran across the region, undermine international peace & security.   All Member States must respect their obligations under international law, including the Charter of the @UN. The Charter clearly prohibits “the threat of the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations.”   I call for an immediate cessation of hostilities & de-escalation. Failing to do so risks a wider regional conflict with grave consequences for civilians & regional stability. I strongly encourage all parties to return immediately to the negotiating table.   I reiterate that there is no viable alternative to the peaceful settlement of international disputes, in full accordance with international law, including the UN Charter. The Charter provides the foundation for the maintenance of international peace and security.

With declining international funding, sustaining progress in the HIV response will increasingly depend on domestic financing, efficient service delivery and continued policy commitment. A pleasure to join SADC Ministers of Health and Ministers responsible for HIV and AIDS today at the Joint Ministerial Meeting in Sandton, South Africa. 🇿🇦 Seven of the eight African countries that achieved the global 95–95–95 HIV targets in 2024 are in this region, demonstrating the impact of sustained national leadership, long term investment and strong health systems delivering at scale. As treatment coverage expands and HIV is increasingly managed as a chronic condition, integrating HIV services fully within primary health care systems will support long term sustainability. @WHO remains committed to supporting Member States to advance towards ending AIDS as a public health threat.

H.E. President @CyrilRamaphosa of South Africa 🇿🇦 chaired the meeting of the AU High-Level Ad hoc Committee on South Sudan 🇸🇸 (C5). The C5+ was well attended by the leadership of the C5 Member States: the Prime Minister of 🇩🇿 representing H.E. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, President of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria; the Vice President of 🇳🇬 representing H. E. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; and the Prime Minister of 🇷🇼 representing H. E. Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda; and a representative of 🇹🇩 H. E. Mahamat Itno Déby, President of the Republic of Chad. H.E. Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of the Republic of #SouthSudan, participated in the C5+ meeting and expressed appreciation to the AU-led mediatory intervention in the country's political crisis. H.E. @ymahmoudali, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, expressed the AU’s readiness to continue to provide support to South Sudan. Distinguished guests of IGAD Member States in attendance included H.E. Ismail Omar Guelleh, President of the Republic of Djibouti 🇩🇯 and Chairperson of IGAD; H. E. Abiy Ahmed (PhD), Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Ethiopia 🇪🇹; H.E. William Samoei Ruto (PhD), President of the Republic of Kenya 🇰🇪; H. E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, President of the Federal Republic of Somalia 🇸🇴; and the Vice President of 🇺🇬 representing H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, President of the Republic of Uganda. H.E. @Lacroix_UN, representing H.E. António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General, also attended, among others. The High-Level meeting agreed to support South Sudan on inclusive political dialogue and trust-building measures to ensure the implementation of the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS). The Heads of State and Government of the C5+ expressed optimism about achieving a peaceful political resolution to the South Sudanese crisis.
