@NBAjeunefille That's my understanding too, but I think they prey on people not knowing that and thinking they're being arrested. I think some places that do this also hire trainee cops which adds to the pressure and confusion

@null_fruit How can they force anyone to do anything without the police there? Like, you can just not go with them and walk out the door? My understanding is usually places make a deal w you where they say they won't call the police if you come w them so you can be banned from the store?

Years ago I worked at Macy's Walnut Room and, as part of orientation, they brought us into the security headquarters in the basement where they showed us the locking cells the use to hold shoplifters until police arrive. Probably not uncommon. Scary & freakish
