In this year’s budget cycle, the City Council Progressive Caucus fought for real public safety by demanding investments in the mental health system with our Crisis to Care campaign. We are thrilled that we won $80 million for these initiatives in the 2025 (FY26) City budget.

The woman whose home Chi is defending is Carmela Charrington, who has been in Rikers for 6 days now for for fighting the theft of her family's home. "Our community is pretty much gone," she told me last month. Said people need to be asking: "How did it happen? Who did it?"

When I introduced the pied-à-terre tax in the State Senate in 2014, I caught plenty of grief from those claiming the sky would fall. It won’t. If you can afford a multi-million-dollar second home, you can afford to help fund our subways and schools.
