LIMmunity 2nd brew !! Motherhood comes with superpower: pathogen protection! nature.com/articles/s4158… We often think moms are immunologically vulnerable to tolerate the baby. But I always wondered: why would evolution make such a critical period of life so dangerous?

What defines human pDC diversity? Our newest work led by @UlezkoAlina in @ImmunityCP uncovers a complex landscape shaped by age and tissue niche, including a cycling pDC subset that declines with age but persists in the BM & expands in malignant BPDCN. shorturl.at/99Zui

This #DayofImmunology, we celebrate the "Guardians of Immune Balance"—Regulatory T Cells! 🛡️ Did you know a cornerstone of the 2025 Nobel Prize-winning research on Tregs was published in The Journal of Immunology? In 1995, Shimon Sakaguchi and colleagues identified CD25 as a marker for these essential suppressor cells, forever changing our understanding of immune tolerance. 📖 Read the classic in @J_Immunol: ow.ly/kMyt50YRPHX.

Dendritic cells are innate immune cells that regulate the quality, magnitude, and duration of antitumor responses. Conventional type 1 dendritic cells (cDC1s) are crucial in this capacity but are paradoxically rare and functionally impaired in most solid tumors. This is a major barrier to effective immunotherapy. The molecular underpinnings of cDC1 dysfunction within the tumor microenvironment are poorly understood. In a new Science study, researchers report that mitochondrial fitness is important for cDC1 function. They also demonstrate the therapeutic rescue of cDC1 function within the tumor microenvironment in mice, which provides a framework for metabolically reprogramming dendritic cells to restore antitumor immunity. “I learned during my years as a trainee that science is very hard and that if your projects are ambitious many, if not most, will fail. Good ideas can come from well-researched experimental plans, but they can also come from something as vague as an informed intuition. So, it is crucial at times to trust your training and knowledge, and to take a leap. In addition, although it is important to have bold ideas, it is equally imperative to know when to let go of the ones that aren’t working out.” - Ardem Patapoutian, who shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2021 with David Julius for their discoveries of receptors for temperature and touch. The first woman to be awarded a Nobel Prize, the first individual to be awarded two Nobel Prizes and still today the only individual with two Nobel Prizes in two different scientific categories: Marie Skłodowska Curie. Skłodowska Curie developed the term radioactivity, discovered the chemical elements polonium and radium and contributed to develop new cancer treatments. For her scientific dedication and remarkable breakthroughs, she was awarded the 1903 physics prize and the 1911 chemistry prize. Learn more: bit.ly/4qGyRS1 #InternationalWomensDay

Our new Nature study, lead by @yuexing identifies a brief early-life window when skin dendritic cells sense common allergens and trigger inflammation right in the skin without migrating to lymph nodes. We define this in-situ activation state as peripheral immune inducer (pii)DC, and show it emerges because of a still-maturing HPA axis and low systemic glucocorticoids. #Naiklab 👉Key takeaways: 1. Early-life immunity plays by different rules. During this window, innate responses to allergens in skin are heighted. 2. Hormones shape immunity in real time. Developmental neuroendocrine states profoundly tune how the immune system reacts, and can set the stage for inflammatory disease.
