@goldfisheater0 @YIMBYLAND 1. Selling to larger stores (who demand lowest price possible) cuts into the profits of wholesalers so they have to offset. 2. SNAP benefits are currently being cut. 3. It lowers food prices for mega chains, not for independent grocers, who then close bc it is unprofitable.

@ocampo_IPS @YIMBYLAND 1. There's nothing to offset. It's just cheaper to sell to larger stores due to their lower operating costs 2. SNAP exists, so small stores can profit in poor areas even if large stores exit. 3. So far, all you've said about corporate concentration is how it lowers food prices.

@goldfisheater0 @YIMBYLAND No. Wholesalers sell to large chains at low prices since the latter have economies of scale. To offset the discounts they give to mega chains, wholesalers sell their products to independent grocers at higher prices. This makes running an independent grocery store less profitable.

@ocampo_IPS @YIMBYLAND You contradicted yourself. If they could sell in those low-income areas before they closed down, then they were profitable at some point. That means there's still opportunity for independent grocers to sell, since now they have more of the market for themselves.

@goldfisheater0 @YIMBYLAND Price discrimination. Independent grocers can't compete with the mega chains, i.e. they pay more for food from wholesalers. This causes independent stores to go out of business and large chains won't open in lower income areas because it's not profitable.

NEW: Rep. Anna Paulina Luna calls for the pardon of the special forces soldier who made $400,000 betting on the capture of Maduro. “Unless the DOJ plans on going after all the crooks in congress currently insider trading, this is simply skewed justice.” “There is no "justice" when guys like this get the book thrown at him yet members are illegally profiting every day…” Spot on.
Collin Rugg@CollinRugg

BREAKING: The DOJ has arrested a special forces soldier who made $400,000 betting on the removal of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, according to ABC. Federal investigators say the soldier bet more than $33,000 just hours before Trump announced Maduro's capture. The special forces soldier was reportedly directly involved with the capture. "The largest position -- a $32,537 bet that Maduro would be out of office by Jan. 31 -- resulted in a 1,242% profit of $404,222," ABC News reported. "Following his successful trading relating to Maduro- and Venezuela-related contracts, [Gannon Ken] VAN DYKE allegedly sent most of his proceeds to a foreign cryptocurrency vault before depositing them into a newly created online brokerage account. The same day of the operation, VAN DYKE withdrew the majority of his allegedly unlawful proceeds from his Polymarket account..." the DOJ announced. "VAN DYKE, 38, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, is charged with three counts of violating the Commodity Exchange Act, each of which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison; one count of wire fraud, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison; and one count of an unlawful monetary transaction, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison."

@SIUC_SPS @YIMBYLAND Agreed. But it is a double-edged sword because these large mega chains refuse to open grocery stores in food deserts because it is simply not profitable. So, what's the solution?

@ocampo_IPS @YIMBYLAND I think price minimums would be extremely unpopular, especially in our current inflationary environment.

@RepLuna So, in other words, we should let crimes go unpunished because you are failing to hold your colleagues accountable. What kind of logic is this? Both Ken and guilty members of congress should be prosecuted for insider trading.

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna
So many Members of Congress are engaging in insider trading everyday. For the DOJ to throw the book at Gannon Ken Van Dyke is a RIDICULOUS double standard. There is no fair justice when Members are exempt from crimes anyone else would go to jail for.

@ocampo_IPS @YIMBYLAND What is the correct number of grocery stores? How many stores to a chain? Or do we just get rid of chains?

Maybe not a popular take but I am calling for this guy to be pardoned. Unless the DOJ plans on going after all the crooks in congress currently insider trading, this is simply skewed justice. There is no “justice” when guys like this get the book thrown at him yet members are illegally profiting every day. I don’t agree with what he did and he should be required to disgorge all the profits however, unless the DOJ plans on doing Congress next, this is not justice.

DOJ releases more information about the U.S. soldier who won more than $400,000 by betting on Maduro's removal. Gannon Ken van Dyke could face up to 60 years in prison on all charges. Prosecutors are also seizing the money he won.

@stolat79 @MsMelChen He provided a definition and fairly argued his point. I respect that. I disagreed bc I didn’t agree with his definition. I associate “downward mobility” with socioeconomic decline. Having VHNW parents & uncle + you still being VHNW doesn’t seem downwardly mobile, imo.

@ocampo_IPS @MsMelChen It’s the same point but you’re wildly inconsistent in your reaction guy. I can see that you think having principles is hypocritical because you cannot even be consistent in apply your principles if you have any other than moral grandstanding.
