@centralkingdom We'd prefer no wars so everyone can trade happily, but if you insist on beating the shit out of eachother then here are a few million drone components.

Today's epiphany. The benefit of deindustrialization is that now no one can fight a total war. There is only one that can, but we are making so much money we just don't want one.

America blew up the Nordstream pipeline, and now has closed the Strait of Hormuz. Hard not to see this as a deliberate strategy of denying energy to Europe, whilst America can produce its own. Callous.

@NewLeftEViews To be fair the war is a slav civil war, in which both sides have been demonstrating Ruskie characteristics. Either the Russian or Ukraine army can sweep through europe in a couple of weeks. And perhaps the Ukrainians will think like Saddam did after his war with Iran and...

A lot of the bizarre and completely self-destructive European servility to its the United States despite seems to be motivated by the delusion that the Russian state, which has failed miserably to subjugate its impoverished neighbour, is three to fours years from invading the Balkans. A German general last week described this as “inevitable”. Apart from the fact that this latest American war, which the Europeans failed to prevent from escalating, is a fiscal godsend to Russia and a drain to Ukrainian military capabilities (which the US hasn’t been supporting directly for a while now) it is also vaguely argued that American intelligence and comms are crucial to the war. To extend that this is true (the importance of the latter, according to some, is overhyped) it has been decided that this aspect of the war in Ukraine war should take precedence over the future of the European project and the freedom and economic well being of its citizens. Who decided that and what is the calculus involved in this sacrifice? The reasonable policy, for both Europeans and Ukrainians, is to build a credible conventional deterrent while working towards a ceasefire. The way you avoid the trap of “peace through strength” is to arm but to talk peace. But people are capable of nothing but reckless war mongering, either due to the insane Eastern European ethnonationalist enmities or some vague belief that “the Russian only understand the language of strength” and that “a human life is worth very little in Russia” (and therefore invasion is inevitable not matter how costly). That’s verbatim what I’ve heard from several NATO people on this matter.
Branko Milanovic@BrankoMilan

You mean after Russia takes over Andreyevka-Gerozinskaya, a viilage of 224 people, it would go straight for Berlin, Paris and Madrid?

Not that I want to see want to see Israel attack Turkey. But the response will be fascinating to watch. Turkey actually has a decent military. And with the US reorientated to the Atlantic and generational support for Israel cratering it might not look like Iran let alone Iraq.

The US should pull out of NATO. Its a buyers club, join, re-kit your whole military on US defence contractors kit. The Europeans can form their own club using their own kit. America can become a Atlantic power (maybe inc CA, MX, UK) in a new club. Israel can go after Turkey.

@adam_tooze @AngelicaOung China absolutely don't want this. But a disinterested leadership is precisely the world want. But China don't want and won't do this. Unsolvable dilemma.

Its not even that @AngelicaOung I'm putting myself in the position of a think tanker in Beijing and asking how easy would it be to write a five point plan for global leadership? The answer is very easy. That tells us something.

@StevenGlinert @adam_tooze What’s wrong Steve? He’s bullish in China and decide to give some advice on how China can help make the world a little better in this chaotic moment that’s well meaning. Why does that mean he is disloyal or biased?

You can just do things. Seriously nobody saw this coming for Cheng Li-wun. This time last year the ex-legislator had nothing better to do but be a regular guest at one of Taiwans many many political talk shows. I was a huge fan of hers. But I didn’t expect much career progression beyond maybe getting her own show. She was out to pasture…a talent misused by the KMT machine. She was a young DPP activist who went to Cambridge to study international relations. “That was when I realized Taiwanese independence was a dead end.” Upon returning to Taiwan she was courted by KMT elder Lien Chan to join the KMT. The KMT never properly made room for her. She was too brash, too unpredictable…and being ex-DPP was held against her. She didn’t seem to mind being sent into “suicide mission” hard green districts. She saw everything but always maintained her sense of humor. Everything changed in 2025 when she announced she was going to run for party chairwoman on a platform of KMT party revival and reaching out across the straits for peace. You can bet your bottom dollar every establishment KMT stakeholder tried to take her down: the rank and file swept her to power. She announced soon after she took power…she was on a mission of peace and her goal was to meet with Xi Jinping. Deafening silence from the mainland. Multiple palace coups came her way from the KMTs pro-American faction. Her old mentor Lien Chan was her protector and she focused on moving forwards. Finally…on March 30, the invitation came. She manifested it. For Xi, the upstart Cheng would be an unproven element. But it would be well for him to meet with someone from Taiwan before he meets with Trump and Angelica’s favorite former talk show guest happened to be available.

China's President Xi Jinping just invited ROC's top opposition leader to China for “peace-building” talks. Peace is the path to peace.

The ultimate chad is a volcel. The hottest girls are throwing themselves at him, but he ain't got no time for this gay lower instincts bullshit. He has an empire to run, people to protect... The most attractive men in history (both fiction and nonfiction), like Batman, Edward Cullen, Kdrama guys or Jesus were all volcels. Hedonistic manwhores are pathetic. Only mentally ill women are attracted to that shit- and more due to self-esteem issues from getting pumped & dumped than by the man himself. Basically all male dating gurus are gay and pathetic.

this guy has written me, like, a hundred eloquent, polite, persuasive, evidence-based posts to the effect that Mainland Chinese born after May 1966 are 1.5 SD uglier than Han Chinese diaspora due to an ad hoc CCP Karmic debt. Falun Dafa ofc. This is typical of Chinese dissidents.

MAGAtards are by and large not humans, thus incapable of comprehending that people outside America have dignity (the very notion of dignity is alien to them). This is why they expected Europeans to just give up Denmark; why they don't get Canadian reactions. Same with Iran.

@teortaxesTex I'm not predicting there will be a coup, but you overestimate the loyalty Iranians have to the current government. Before the protests earlier in the year there were loyalists (30%), reformists (40%), and "blow it all up" (30%). After, most reformists jumped to "blow it all up"

> Most teams in China, including many inside Huawei itself, still mostly use NVIDIA GPUs for training and inference. The common consensus is that Ascend is still pretty hard to use no matter how much people hype it up for all you "DeepSeek tried to train V4 on Huawei" truthers.

No, only the infra people who are really deep into the Ascend ecosystem tend to use it. The common consensus is that Ascend is still pretty hard to use no matter how much people hype it up.

A Taiwanese girlboss in the political wilderness boldly seized a chairmanship position others in the party avoided as a poisoned chalice. She championed positions that polled badly, out of step with the mainstream. She was ridiculed, told her party will even lose more badly in upcoming elections unless she course-corrects and triangulate to the ruling party’s ideology. People laugh at her, calling her ballot-box poison and predicting her party will be unelectable for decades if it even survives. Am I talking about KMT Chairwoman Cheng Li-wen? No. I’m talking about former DPP Chairwoman and two-term President Tsai Ing Wen. People have such short memories in Taiwan they don’t even remember 2012. Back then it was the pro-unification side that seemed unbeatable and everyone had China fever. Through the single-mindedness of her vision Tsai created political space for her brand of pro-Taiwanese sovereignty that avoided the head-on confrontation of declaring a Republic of Taiwan and instead appropriated the Republic of China shell to declare « we are already independent ». She championed LGBT issues that made her a civil rights left darling internationally and made capitalized on Ma’s political missteps and the voter’s natural tendency to turf out a two-term incumbent to win the presidency in 2016. Her popularity dipped again and for a while it seems she would be a one-term president. But 2019’s HK riots spiked Sinophobia, delivering her another term. People who think Cheng Li-wen’s panda-hugging is « ballot box poison » are basically ahistoric. Plus they don’t understand the cycles of ebb and flow in populist sentiment. They say they love democracy, but they don’t understand it.
