@CDDWestAfrica 🇳🇬 today officially opened its high-level policy dialogue on post-coup governance in the Sahel. Our Director set the tone with a powerful welcome keynote - the challenge is no longer just restoring democratic order, but reimagining it. 📒Dr. Lassane Ouedraogo delivered a compelling comparative assessment of post-coup governance across Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. 💡Key insight: externally derived governance models were actively redefined by realities on the ground. This is what evidence-based policy looks like. 🌍 🎙️ The panel session moderated by Prof. Okechukwu Ibeanu unpacked the hard questions: → What does legitimacy look like in post-coup contexts? → How should regional & international actors respond? → What does long-term stability actually require? ✔️The verdict from today's dialogue is clear: Post-coup governance in the Sahel is not a temporary disruption. it is actively reshaping the region's political trajectory. The shift needed: from restoring systems to reimagining them. #Sahel #Governance #WestAfrica #CDDWestAfrica #Peacebuilding #Policy

Sahel Chronicles

For decades, this small West African country was the example. No coups since 1972. Peaceful transfers of power. A working democracy in a region where strongmen ruled. Then, in December 2025, gunshots cracked through the capital. A group of mutinous soldiers stormed the state TV and declared a new era. They said the government had failed them. That their brothers were dying in the north, fighting jihadists, while politicians in the south rewrote the constitution. By noon, it was over. Loyal forces crushed the coup. Nigeria sent jets. The president, Patrice Talon, appeared on camera looking calm. Crisis averted. Democracy saved? Not exactly. Here's what they are not telling you about the coup in Benin Republic.

It was an honor to join delegates at the #SouthSouthRegionalRegionalConference2025 organised by @Globalrightsng with the support from @EUinNigeria to discuss strategies to improve the regulatory environment for CSO operations at the subnational level #SSRC2025 #CivilSpace @wacsi

What Just Happened in Uyo? Earlier this week in Uyo, at least 200 stakeholders from across the South-South and beyond came together with one purpose: To build a Nigeria where civil society can thrive , not just survive. Hosted by the Community of Practice on Civic Space Strengthening (facilitated by Global Rights with support from @euinnigeria), the 2025 South-South Regional Conference brought real people together: lawmakers, CSO leaders, regulators, policy experts, all saying enough to regulatory chaos. “CAMA, FIRS, and anti-terrorism laws sometimes stifle the very voices we ought to amplify. But with regular dialogue, we can protect the civic space while still protecting our country.” — Hon. Victor Obuzor The theme was simple but powerful: Scaling Policy to Action. Because our civic space deserves more than endless talks. It needs structure. It needs protection. It needs us working together. #SouthSouthRegionalConference2025 #SSRG2025 #CivicSpace

A New Way of Thinking: Once upon a time, government and civil society couldn’t see eye to eye. Suspicion, fear, and tension defined the relationship. But not anymore. “This project is changing that narrative. We are no longer ‘us’ vs ‘them’. We are partners in progress.” — Mr. Ken Henshaw “CSOs have been central to our democratic development — from promoting the rule of law, to political participation, to holding leaders accountable.” — Hon. Kufreabasi Edidem We saw conversations shift. We saw warmth. We saw government officials, regulators, and activists seated together — not as opponents, but as citizens. Together, we began to reimagine regulation — not as a tool of control, but as a framework for trust, inclusion, and progress. #SouthSouthRegionalConference2025 #SSRG2025 #CivicSpace

Voices that Shape Our Future: The heart of this conference? Voices. And those voices were clear. “Civil society is the bridge — between the people and the government, between demands and delivery. If we keep that bridge strong, democracy wins.” — Abiodun Baiyewu “The judiciary is ready to partner with civil society. We want an egalitarian Nigeria — where no one is oppressed, where power is truly held in trust for the people.” — Ekong Ekong Imona We also launched the CSO State Ranking Dashboard — a first-of-its-kind tool tracking which states are improving (or repressing) civic space. Because change thrives when it is measured, intentional, and driven by data and empathy. 🧭 See the dashboard here: cso.globalrights.org The work continues. #SouthSouthRegionalConference2025 in Uyo showed us that collaboration is possible — and powerful. #SSRG2025 #CivicSpace
