Jeff Bezos on the exact moment he realized he would never be a great physicist: "I wanted to be a theoretical physicist. I went to Princeton. I was a really good student, I got A-pluses on almost everything. I was in the honors physics track, which starts with 100 students and by quantum mechanics it's down to 30." Then came the homework problem: "I can't solve this partial differential equation. It's really, really hard. I've been studying with my roommate Joe, who was also really good at math. The two of us worked on this one problem for three hours and got nowhere." They decided to visit Yasantha, the smartest guy at Princeton: "He was Sri Lankan. In the Facebook, which was an actual paper book at that time, his name was three lines long. I guess in Sri Lanka when you do something good for the king, they give you an extra syllable on your name. The most humble, wonderful guy." Jeff continues: "We show him the problem. He stares at it for a while and says, 'Cosine.' I'm like, 'What do you mean?' He says, 'That's the answer.' I said, 'That's the answer?' He said, 'Yeah, let me show you.' He sits us down, writes out three pages of detailed algebra, everything crosses out, and the answer is cosine." Jeff asked if he solved it in his head: "He said, 'No, that would be impossible. Three years ago I solved a very similar problem and I was able to map this problem onto that one. Then it was immediately obvious the answer was cosine.'" Jeff reflects: "That was an important moment for me. Because that was the very moment I realized I was never going to be a great theoretical physicist."

After five failed surgeries on her face, Lucy Gathoni was almost at the point of despair. But, a team of more than 20 specialists in Nairobi took on one of the most complex procedures ever performed in Kenya: an 18-and-a-half-hour facial reconstruction surgery to remove tumours and rebuild her face once more. For the last 2 years, @WillowHealthKe has been on this.

After announcing a record profit of Sh75.5 billion for the 2025 financial year, Equity Group Holdings Chief Executive James Mwangi calmly presented the lender’s financial statements once again, but this time, in US dollars (USD). Mwangi noted that the figures had grown significantly, prompting the lender to begin reporting its balance sheet in USD terms. “We can confidently say we have made a profit in excess of $700 million,” he said. “We can really talk about USD because it’s big numbers.” Mwangi said Equity no longer played in the ‘village’ league. ow.ly/qNiV50YxUXk

Judicial Service Commission Kenya (JSC)
The Judicial Service Commission led by its Chairperson, Chief Justice Martha Koome, today convened a stakeholder engagement forum on the recruitment and selection of a Judge of the Supreme Court of Kenya. The discussions focused on the attributes of a suitable candidate, including integrity, impartiality, competence, and a strong commitment to inclusivity, particularly in reflecting regional and ethnic diversity. The Commission invited a broad cross-section of stakeholders from the Judiciary, legal sector, academia, professional bodies, private sector, civil society, faith-based organisations, media, county and national government. Participants included the Law Society of Kenya, International Commission of Jurists, Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA Kenya), Kituo Cha Sheria, Bunge la Wananchi, Kenya National Union of Teachers, the Kenya Judicial Staff Association, and representatives of the Supreme Court. Also in attendance were faith-based organisations—namely the Kenya Council of Church Alliances and Ministries, Evangelical Alliance of Kenya, Anglican Church of Kenya, and the Hindu Council of Kenya—as well as the Executive Office of the President, represented by the Deputy Head of Public Service. Academic institutions represented included the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, Strathmore University, and the Kenya School of Law.

Kenyatta University Teaching Referral Hospital was ordered by the High Court to immediately and unconditionally release the body of Roselyn Mukoko Aura, which had been unlawfully detained over an outstanding medical bill of Kshs 561,502. The Court made it clear that a dead body is neither property nor a commodity capable of being held as security. Its continued detention serves no lawful purpose and only inflicts unnecessary psychological suffering on the bereaved family while undermining their dignity. Justice L N Mugambi dismissed the hospital’s preliminary objections, firmly stating that a body cannot be used as collateral for debt. While the hospital retains the right to recover the outstanding amount through lawful means, that process cannot come at the expense of the family’s right to a dignified burial.

🚨COURT AWARDS KSHS. 800K FOR MALICIOUS PROSECUTION AFTER UNLAWFUL ARREST AND ABUSE OF POWER🙌 In Joseph Motari Mosigisi v Kimunai Ole Kimei & Others (Court of Appeal, 2026), several wananchi were arrested and charged with hindering a burial, only for the entire criminal case to collapse for lack of evidence. The court found there was no prima facie case, meaning the charges should never have seen the inside of a courtroom. The victims then sued for malicious prosecution and violation of their constitutional rights and succeeded, each being awarded Kshs. 800,000. When execution began, the public officer behind the prosecution tried to escape personal liability, arguing that he acted in his official capacity and the Government should pay instead. The courts shut that down without hesitation. They held that a public officer who acts maliciously or outside the law cannot hide behind the shield of office. Once the court had already determined that he was properly sued in his personal capacity, it became functus officio on that issue, meaning it could not be reopened just because the consequences became uncomfortable. The attempt to shift liability to the Government was seen for what it was, a late and improper attempt to re-litigate settled issues. The Court of Appeal upheld the decision: personal liability remains, appeal dismissed, costs awarded. For the ordinary mwananchi, this is not just legal theory, it is a warning and an opportunity. If you are arrested or prosecuted without proper basis, you are not powerless. The law allows you to challenge that abuse and even claim compensation. More importantly, this case shows that responsibility can follow the individual officer, not just disappear into “government.” The system may be slow and frustrating, but it is not designed to protect impunity forever. When pushed correctly, it forces accountability where it actually belongs.
