I grew up reading stories like “Supertoys last all summer long” by Brian Aldiss and Isaac Asimov’s “Robbie”, so amid all the fretting about AI I’m still quite excited
Dan Bloom@danbloom1

NEW: Civil servants are testing AI-enabled toys to see if they are safe The procedure by the little-known Office for Product Safety & Standards involves putting the toys through real-life scenarios to see how they respond Great story by my colleague @JoeBambridge1

@TheSimonEvans Well get ready to read the fall of Hyperion as well as they cannot be separated. Carrion Comfort and Illium are also to my mind well worth reading.

I’ve not read Dan Simmons, but I don’t think the death of an author has ever occasioned more heartfelt plaudits from both contemporaries and readers, that make him sound exactly the kind of thing I’d like. Namely, hugely ambitious and inventive literary science fiction, weaving historical and poetic references in to a degree teetering on the edge of pretentious, but not only getting away with it, leaving readers profoundly moved. I shall be reading Hyperion, first, and soon.
_DavidMorrell@_DavidMorrell

My dear friend & incomparable author Dan Simmons died Saturday from a stroke at age 77. He defied literary norms, exploring historical fiction, horror, crime & other genres. His must-read titles include THE SONG OF KALI & HYPERION. He was one of a kind. dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/lon…

In the interests of total accuracy, the esteemed Lord Patten (speaking v good sense on BBC) ascribed the line “infamy, infamy, they’ve all got it in for me” to Frankie Howerd - when it was I think Kenneth Williams. (Carry on Cleo)

The Old Sergeant. It’s a long time since I have visited a Desi Pub in London. It’s a nice traditional pub, footy on the box, cheap enough pints, full Indian menu if you fancy a ruby. #oldsergeant #desipub #sw18

@PubsSaving I walked past two weeks ago and saw it was alive again, many happy memories of this and its previous incarnation as Morgan’s Wine Bar. Will need to visit shortly.

@LondonPubMap In the early 90s this used to be opposite my office. Back then a standard city borders pub. On a recent visit noticed it is now hipster heaven, still enjoyed it though.

Farage the showman testifying at the US House Judiciary Committee Uninterrupted speeches are his strength Entertaining, occasionally witty never has solutions And of course his payday line “I come from the land if Magna Carta” comes right at the start
