My ancestors buried half their children. All mine are alive. My ancestors' house had a dirt floor. Mine is wood. I have indoor plumbing, I have hot water, I have never in my life hauled a full bucket half a mile and I probably never will. Do you know how rare it is, in human history, for small children to wear shoes? Mine have multiple pairs. I can speak to my relatives who live thousands of miles away, for free, at any time. Video, if we want video. With machine translation, if we speak different languages. The original Library of Congress had 740 books in it. I have more than that. If I run out of books in my home my local public library has 350,000. If I want to take a hundred books with me on vacation, they all fit on a device that fits in my purse. I have heat in the winter and AC in the summer and a washing machine and I have never, ever, ever had to scrub a dress clean by hand in the stream. I can look up recipes from more than a hundred different countries and I've tried dozens of them. I ride a clean and modern train across my city for $4, or take a robot taxi if I'm out too late for the train. I donate $40,000 every year to the cause of getting healthcare to the world's poorest people and even after the donations I never have to think about whether I can afford a book, or a pair of shoes, or a cup of coffee. There is a great deal more to fight for, of course. I hope that our descendants will look back on our lives and list a thousand ways they're richer. Maybe we ourselves will do that, if some of the crazier stuff comes true. But the abundance is all around you and to a significant degree you aren't feeling it only because fish don't notice water.

I think one of the funniest things is how frontier labs spout how AI is writing their code, but the reality is that the products they ship are buggy, resource hungry messes. It's kind of the worst advertisement ever for both their products and their worldview.

Claude Code has regressed an absurd amount in the last few days. Timestamps no longer update unless you un-focus/re-focus the tab. "thinking" doesn't show at all. I had a query run for 6 minutes with 0 output. This is genuinely unpleasant to use.

I don't want to name any names but too many AI based products I'm using lately are insanely buggy. As a user I totally do not benefit from the fast shipping cycles of these companies and I can feel the slop through my beachball cursors.

@claudeai Desktop app is extremely buggy and laggy - randomly missing context when switching between chat and code tabs. Often times, the "agents" will run for minutes on end with no visual updates and fail to deliver an output in the end.

@obsdmd is there a way to remove the "create a note" in the quick switcher? I have only ever accidentally created new notes

The behavior of "find in page" is interesting. When you search for a word, - if it appears in the viewport, the search focuses on the visible match - if it doesn't appear in the viewport, the search focuses on the first result

@kepano @omeruzvn What I love about Obsidian is that gives you the space to grow. As your tastes change, so do the tools that you use in Obsidian. You may even switch to something else entirely – it's the space and freedom to do so that matters.

@kepano @omeruzvn I loved the essay, but I'm not sure if I agree with Obsidian attracting a different lifestyle.

@ImSh4yy I do like that the chat interface is just another text editor - you can easily make use of vim keybindings. But I do agree that the AI experience is quite primitive. They have a lot of work to do in terms of automatically managing context.

Zed has a huge opportunity to jump on the AI wave right now. It's a great product, it feels great to use, and it has all the potential to compete with all these VS Code forks out there. However, every time I want to give it a try, I get frustrated with the AI features and can't use it for more than a few minutes before jumping back to Cursor. It all feels disconnected and very primitive. Feels similar to the early days of Copilot. I'm not sure exactly what's going on here, but it's a huge missed opportunity. I want to like it, but not at the cost of my productivity.
