The Bangle Hawker— India, c. 1910 The profession of bangle sellers, often referred to as manihar in some parts of India, is a traditional vocation with roots stretching back thousands of years, historically tied to local temple fairs, cultural rituals, and the representation of women's lifecycle stages. Historically, these traders have served as mobile vendors, bringing brightly colored bangles to rural and urban women. The bangle industry in India dates back to 2500 BC. Bangles have never been just accessories; they are regarded as auspicious tokens of a woman’s "radiant life," representing her marital status and happiness. Traditionally, specific families, often known as Manihar, were designated to supply bangles to villages. While men often made and transported the bangles, women of the household frequently participated in the sale, known as maniharin, moving from house to house. This allowed for comfort among village women, as the sellers were often female. #banglesellers #history

He could speak 8 languages and they said he could recite all 37 of Shakespeare's plays from memory. An award winning playwright & stage artist and one of Satyajit Ray's favourite actors. Also one of India's finest comic actors in films like Golmaal, and Hirak Rajar Deshe. The irony is that the marvellous comic roles in Golmaal and other films, what most people outside remember him for, is what he regarded as the least important "I have developed a technique of shutting my mind off, switching it off, rather. I will not be able to tell you even the names of the films I have acted in or even the name of the character I have just finished shooting.” He was also a brilliant writer & regular theatre reviewer. “Mr.Dutt as Othello was rather a pitiable sight, with his voice gone, his breathing laboured and his bulk enormous.” This was Utpal Dutt reviewing his own stage performance using the pseudonym Iago. He also loved classical art and there is this wonderful story told by his daughter. "When we went to Italy, it meant we would have to spend at least one day on viewing each sculpture. We had hired the services of a guide. But, we found that Baba knew more about the place than the guide. The next day, the guide asked us if we would be ready to go on our own." A true renaissance man and a principled one, not scared to go to prison for his views. Utpal Dutt was truly one of our greats. 97th birth anniversary today.

When we begin a pooja, we invoke Brahma, Vishnu and Ganesh. As the IPL begins, we remember our own trinity: Ganesh- Lalit Modi, who created the game. Vishnu- Jay Shah, who sustains and grows it. Brahma- Sachin Tendulkar, the ‘God of Cricket’. In India, cricket is a religion.

Ludhianvi's work ("Abhi saanson ki khushboo hawaon mein hai") to write the lyrics for the first antara of this song. The song is often cited as a classic example of a "woman at the piano" song in Indian cinema. Directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee.

sanu sariyaan, visar gaiyaan ravaan ve, kede paase jaiye sajna. punjabi is some magical language man. thousands of dialects to express music, respect'em all but none feels more hypnotic than punjabi. be it any emotion, this language has some inherent tonality or rhythm or very beautiful syllable engineering which so effortlessly blends with any composition. feels like this language was invented to be the official lyrical expression of musical tunes.
