@JohnGonzalesLA1 It appears that many people outside of LA County believe that the AI "doom" videos accurately depict the reality of living here.

The quality, veracity, and relevance of takes on the Los Angeles mayoral race is inversely proportional to the distance a poster lives from the Los Angeles city limits.

@stqnfield @HNLTransitFan Definitely nowhere near that high but still one of the best in the US. I believe around 25% now and about 35-40% prior to the pandemic, if strictly looking at fare revenue.

@orenbj @humantransit Hasn't been any meaningful reduction in service quality this century, despite multiple dramatic reductions in fare prices. Safe to say in Victoria, the two are totally decoupled.

@rockgecko_dev @humantransit Jarrett’s caveat was "if the service is inadequate," while you note that "the service level is excellent." It seems like you actually are in agreement. Free fares won't boost ridership if cutting the revenue stream causes service quality to drop.

@orenbj @humantransit Mr Walker literally said it wouldn't. Free V/Line has undeniably got thousands more people out of their cars. The service level is excellent, with ~20-60min headways to Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo (160km @ up to 160kph) twitter.com/humantransit/s…
Jarrett Walker@humantransit

News from Melbourne. Making public transit free will not get people out of their cars if the service is inadequate. Charging fares and improving service is the path to success.

@US_Stormwatch Fascinating map! It looks like a massive footprint at this scale, but doesn’t the USDA Cropland Data Layer put almonds at roughly 11% of the total Central Valley geographic acreage? This looks to be far greater than that. Do you have a source for the image?

Insane stat of the day: California almonds use roughly 3–5.5 million acre-feet of water per year, depending on methodology. That's ~4-7x more water than all data centers in North America used combined in 2025.

@rockgecko_dev @humantransit Does anyone deny that free fares increase ridership? I think the argument is more that fare revenue is a 100% flexible funding source that is reinvested into the system. The paywall also helps maintain safety & cleanliness. It could work well in a high-trust society, though.

@HNLTransitFan Yes, exactly. NYC's massive ridership volume + dense network inside a single city's border makes a flat fare workable. I believe their longest line is just above 32 miles.

@orenbj A sensible answer! Thanks. I’m assuming this means cities like New York have high enough ridership to maintain a single fare structure?

@the_bigJ0469 I believe the system prioritizes TAP first if it detects both. If you are on Android, you may need to have the app open while tapping.

@orenbj Pretty cool Now a personal concern of mine is that I have my college go-pass, and I have it on the tap card app on my phone. The concern is that I also have my bank card Google pay, so I'm concerned that the validator might charge my bank card instead of the tap card.

@orenbj not supposed to talk much about this so i’ll just say that it’s crazy to me that LAWA’s flyaway is also soft launching contactless payment today but LADOT transit’s DASH isn’t 😭 tbf like half of DASH fare readers are busted but still!
