@Free_ByTheSea Shoplifters will target the shop with the higher value products - which is Waitrose.
But if they wanted to choose a shop whereby staff are instructed not to physically intervene with shoplifters, then either Waitrose or Iceland is fine. In fact, any supermarket is fine.
English

I hear that Waitrose are standing by their apalling decision to sack Walker Smith- a brave employee who stood up to a shop lifter.🙄
But apparently Iceland has told Walker that he’d be more than welcome there. 👍
Which retailer would you target if you were a shop lifter? 🤷♀️
Perhaps one of the reasons that retailer charges its paying customers a premium? 🤔
Posh but stupid.🤡

English

@chrisolive8035 @LBC Doesn’t take a genius to work out that all big supermarket chains have the same policies on staff involvement with shoplifters.
English

@orwell168 @LBC Suddenly the expert on Iceland employment contracts? 🤡

English

@JoeDoeToday @LBC Bollocks is it? And I suppose you think Iceland are just being kind? Rubbish. They’ve seen an opportunity for publicity. They will have the same policies about shoplifting. Maybe they wouldn’t have sacked him. But they won’t financially back him if he goes against training/policy
English

@welovesybil @LBC Potential claims by him in the event of injury. And litigation by thieves who claim they’ve been unlawfully injured through excessive force.
This is why ALL supermarkets have the same policies.
I’m not defending it. I’m just pointing out the reality of the situation.
English

🚨WONDERFUL NEWS! Iceland have offered a job to Walker Smith, the hero who was SACKED by @waitrose for stopping a shoplifter.
Well done Iceland. 👏👏👏
Waitrose should hang their heads in shame!

English

@FlowerP79667758 How? He signed a contract saying he would abide by their policies. He didn’t. So they sacked him. I’m sympathetic for him. But he has no case.
English

The employee should take them to a tribunal for wrongful dismissal.

🚨WAITROSE DOUBLES DOWN ON SACKED WORKER What is wrong with you @waitrose ? Waitrose have released a statement CONFIRMING they believe they think they were RIGHT to sack Walker Smith for trying to stop a shoplifter WAITROSE STATEMENT IN COMMENTS 👇
English

@WhetstoneSDP Iceland have same policies around staff non-intervention with shoplifters as Waitrose.
If he takes the job and tackles a shoplifter, he’ll be in breach of their policy too.
English

@MalHay All other shops have thought of that. They all have the same policies. They ignore shoplifting and pass the costs on to customers and thereby avoid litigation.
Shoplifters are smart.
Shops are smart.
We, the honest majority, are the mugs.
English

@nigelmp Iceland has exactly the same policy around staff non-intervention with shoplifters as Waitrose. They may well offer him a job. But they’ll explicitly tell him not to do the same thing again.
English

@DailyMail @obbsie Iceland appear to have exactly the same policies around staff non-intervention with shoplifters. So I wonder what Iceland will do if he tackles another shoplifter in violation of their policy. What if he or the thief get injured? Will Iceland pay out damages? (I doubt it)

@LJC1715796 @GoodwinMJ I really don’t know how you could misunderstand my point so wildly.
I’m not advocating for the status quo. I’m pointing out the craziness of how businesses pass the costs of shoplifting on to us, the honest majority, and we just seem to accept it.
English

@orwell168 @GoodwinMJ You literally just contradicted yourself. So you don’t want to pay for mass shoplifting but you think raising prices to cover cost is correct way to deal with it? Doing the right thing is not difficult. It’s easy. Just as easy as not doing the right thing. Both are easy.
English

@InspGadgetBlogs What’s the context here? It doesn’t sound bad to me. Sounds like she’s engaging in black humour; something the police should understand.
And where are we deporting her to? Scotland?
English

Baroness Ayesha Hazarika should be thrown out of the House of Lords, sacked from Times Radio, cancelled, imprisoned, and deported. These people think grooming is funny.

🚨NEW: Baroness Ayesha Hazarika, a Labour Peer nominated by Keir Starmer, was recorded joking about grooming gangs while appearing on a radio show
English

I worked for @waitrose security was a complete joke. We were all told not to confront shoplifters . Result? They came in store in droves and just emptied the spirits shelves! There was only 1 security guard and what could he do? They must price in the nicking to their prices

English

@Lusa42874 @IsabelOakeshott On a serious note, thank you for the work that you do. And I want your management to back you if you intervene in retail theft. And I hope that those more able can physically intervene and also be backed by your management.
English

@Lusa42874 @IsabelOakeshott Yes. I want to remove all women and older people from the workplace. Congratulations. You saw through my ruse. I masqueraded as pretending I cared about a high trust and low crime society where everyone plays a role in keeping the peace. But secretly I just hate women and the old
English

@orwell168 @IsabelOakeshott So security guards not retail staff? Security guards that Waitrose already employ in certain stores. I work in retail and I’m a lot older. No way would I be able to physically restrain anyone! Or do you want to get rid of a majority female, older employees?
English

@EC2man Yes yes yes. Why are not more people pointing this out? The architects of our low trust, individualistic society are bemoaning the fact that people act like they’re living in a low trust individualistic society.
English

What this grandstanding MP will not want to discuss is the role he and his fellow parliamentarians have played creating the social environment in which shoplifting is now widespread and tolerated by the police, and the legal environment in which an employer can be hauled before the courts, fined, censured and held liable in damages for failing in its duty of care towards employees.
Chris Philp MP@CPhilpOfficial
Letter to CEO of Waitrose calling for their employee Walker Smith to be reinstated and given a bonus - after he was disgracefully sacked for tackling a shoplifter
English

@DavidDavisMP This is a society shaped by Thatcherism. No such thing as society; just individual men and women. Everyone looks after their own self interest. Businesses are free to do what they want with minimal regulation in order to maximise profit.
Doing the ‘right thing’ is irrational.
English

Has the world gone mad? In a more sensible era, this man would have been rewarded for being brave.
Instead, Waitrose sacked him for stopping a suspected shoplifter from stealing a bag of Easter eggs.
