New Hampshire Shoots to Strengthen Self-Defense! My bill has been signed into law and takes effect on January 1, 2027. New Hampshire HB 1279 (2026) further strengthens the state’s already strong self-defense laws by expanding castle doctrine protections. This reinforces New Hampshire’s position as a national leader in Second Amendment rights. The bill clarifies and expands the right to use physical force (including deadly force when justified) to protect not only yourself but also family members, guests, and other third persons inside your home or its immediate surroundings (the “curtilage”). “New Hampshire’s ‘Live Free or Die’ spirit includes the fundamental right to defend our loved ones,” said the bill’s prime sponsor, Rep. Yury Polozov. “Prior law already allowed deadly force to protect yourself in your home when facing a felonious threat. HB 1279 ensures you can also protect your spouse, children, or others present without legal ambiguity.
