@wmataGM I think he’s talking about the Exitfare machines. Aren’t they still cash only? It does present a complication if you need to top up a traditional SmarTrip to complete a trip.

Sorry if you didn’t have a good experience on Metro but need to provide clarity that at every station we have card machines, plus we have credit/debit/apple pay etc, we do not have an egress issue even during peak & I believe our staff are customer focused & ready to help.
M. Nolan Gray 🥑@mnolangray

I will say, requiring that riders tap out is fine in theory, but sucks in the US contexts where I've experienced it, especially in DC, where station managers are universally unpleasant and many stations don't have card accepting machines past the gate.

@wmataGM You don't have card machines inside the fare gate perimeter. If you don't have sufficient exit fare, you need to have cash on hand. It's inexcusable. And it's been this way for decades. Just put machines inside the system that accept credit cards already.

@alanthefisher Highly recommend Hyattsville Crossing station on the Green Line. IMO, the most distinctive WMATA station. Also good views of the 1st St Tunnel Portal at NJ Ave & D St SE, easy walk from Capitol South. Plenty of VRE & Amtrak traffic in AM & PM peaks.

I'm going to be in DC for some trips, what are some unique transit things to see in and around the city? I'm talking about nerdy stuff that people usually don't mention

@alanthefisher Ride the Metro out to Wiehle, Vienna, or Shady Grove (assuming it isn’t raining) to see what it’s like to go 75 mph. The tunnel under the Potomac going outbound (Foggy Bottom to Rosslyn) is 75 as well (65 inbound). ATO and Design Speed is awesome

As a result of the heat, we are reducing speeds on above-ground track for safety reasons. Please plan additional travel time. Stay cool out there!

@commies25 @wmata This is completely normal. ATO being on changes nothing about the train protection systems baked into the signal system.

The Future is Now: Another @Amtrak “Next Generation” train set—assembled at Alstom in Hornell, NY—is completed and soon to be ready for use on the Northeast Corridor hopefully this spring. Caught it near Swain, NY today. These sleek new sets are capable of speeds of 160 MPH.

@BarredinDC @JoeHeim @wmata Loudoun Gateway is also the location for the Dulles Yard employee shuttle. I don’t know if employee taps are counted in this metric but if they are the true ridership for the station is even lower.

@walkinghispath @hankgreen Keep in kind this is at 3am, usually the low point in terms of demand, so natural gas’s influence is typically much higher (above 50%)
