DSA has to grow out of the thing where losing a vote means you rush to Twitter or wherever to catastrophize about it in the most dishonest terms you think you can get away with

@HankeyLeone @_ericblanc Yes! Here's a picture of an original SPA mail ballot from 1915. They decided lots of questions by mail referenda. For the record though, I don't think "the SPA did it" is on its own a useful argument for why we should do something in DSA

An election to pick who represents 0.4% of the population shouldn't be dominating national news. But unequal suffrage + the two party system means it could decide who controls the entire country's legislative branch next year. In a real democracy, Graham Platner would be a nobody

Debs went to prison, which contributed to his death, for urging anyone who would listen to reject their “military duty.” This is insulting
Chris Cutrone@ccutrone1970

@redistribu11188 Politics and military duty are not the same thing. Publicly arguing politically against wars doesn't preclude fulfilling duties when serving in uniform and under military discipline. - Debs was a civilian and not himself a soldier: he wasn't in the military or dodge the draft.

@peakcapitolism I feel like the edge cases where a draft might happen are if there’s some kind of mass-casualty false flag attack on US soil or if Trump’s people manage to actually overthrow the 2026/2028 elections and are a couple years into a really catastrophic failed occupation of Iran

@peakcapitolism An actual draft would require an act of Congress, which is probably impossible in the next session, and I doubt they’ll 1) commit to a full ground invasion and 2) decide all options short of a draft won’t cut it all in the next 10 months

I think any serious talking about The Draft is the same kind of hysteria as thinking about iran nuking us. Its trying to find a way where the war affects us on par with the damage we're doing overseas

The blowback from the Vietnam draft occurred in the context of a broadly popular domestic regime where conscription had been an accepted fact of life for >20yrs. Imagine a draft under the least popular admin ever, in a recession, when no one younger than 60 remembers the last one

@DougLain Where does the “civic duty” to serve in our imperialist armed forces in a war instigated against the overwhelming opposition of the people come from? Instead of mechanically reproducing 2I doctrine we should ask what about it is worth extracting and adapting for today

The reaction to Cutrone restating basic Second International doctrine regarding war is revealing of the level of disintegration we've reached on the left. The doctrine: Struggle against imperial war politically. Fulfill one's civic duties personally. Socialists should not dodge the draft, for example.

@Sarah_pdx The progressive blob became pro-cop in 2021 in response to crime wave propaganda and the socialist left failed to carve out an independent lane. I think the idea that the demands of 2020 lost their mass base is totally wrong. We’ve been railroaded on this one

Something i’ve been thinking about: of the big contemporary social justice movements, even politicians like Zohran run from defund and hardly anyone carries on the legacy of MeToo, while Abolish ICE and Free Palestine gained critical ground. What’s the difference?

The “Unleash Chang” malapropism chain is incredibly post-apocalyptic. Something you’d see in After the End
Rapid Response 47@RapidResponse47

.@SecRubio: "We're going to unleash Chang on these people in the next few hours and days. You're going to really begin to perceive a change in the scope and intensity of these attacks as, frankly, the two most powerful air forces in the world take apart this terroristic regime."

Reza Pahlavi is the heir to a regime of corruption and brutality imposed by outsiders on the Iranian people. He has lived a life of a self proclaimed "prince" supported by the money stolen from the people. His presence demeans the sacrifices being made for freedom.

@JacktheFate Alright. Idk what you're hoping to get out of wading into a 10+ year old debate like you already know everything and brushing off anyone who pushes back on your framing as a jerk but enjoy lol

as i have been tweeting about DSA more, i am seeing that lots of members seem to actually feel just like i do about its democratic party entryism. what i don’t get: how can you feel that way and stay in the org? my DMs are open if anyone wants to discuss.

@JacktheFate It's not. The term "entryism" doesn't mean anything in relation to how the capitalist parties in the US actually function and "Democratic Party entryism" doesn't usefully describe the actual strategy preached or practiced by the right wing of DSA

@sam_amiga_webs I think refining our ideas in a serious way is an important for a historically pretty confused and directionless socialist movement 👍 the "I wrote a tweet about this" and "illiteracy is a virtue" sentiments have been the real plagues on the left for a long time

I agree with Julius Malema's EFF and VI Lenin's RSDLP: sending deputies to heckle in reactionary legislatures is a useful tactic for building an opposition party. I would hope to see a larger bloc of socialists committed to disrupting the empire's Congress instead of more AOCs
