China will sell its $100 widgets elsewhere, & the US will either have a widget shortage, OR will make its own widgets which, since the US company has to pay far more in labor, materials, rents, insurance etc, will cost the consumer far more than if there were no tariffs

@FlindyD @notcapnamerica @Iran7070 Let's say a widget is worth $100 wholesale on the US Market. Trump slaps a $50 tariff on the widget. How much is the importer willing to pay China now? Answer: $50 less. To say China doesn't pay the tariff is a bit disingenuous.

@MrAnton_Ego @notcapnamerica You’re right: tariffs are meant to discourage US companies from importing from China. BUT, materials, labor, rents - & many other costs-are far greater in the US. These high expenses are passed on to the consumer, so the consumer still pays more than if there were no tariffs.

The point of tariffs is to promote bottom-up manufacturing in the United States. Yes, there will be US companies importing goods they outsourced to china paying the tariffs. THAT IS THE POINT. A tariff in that situation makes the manufacturing of the goods in China essentially equal to what the cost would be to manufacture in the United States. A tariff protects US manufacturing against foreign nations with inhumane labor environments that pay pennies in labor. And so I must ask, are YOU that dumb? Did you think this halfwit clip was some intellectual dig?

@kanekavi @CorrinaLeeB Puerto Ricans living in PR are US citizens. They can’t vote in US elections. Yet, if they move to a US state, they ARE eligible to vote (b/c they are, and have been since 1917, US citizens). Makes no sense. Ask your relatives & friends to vote blue, to end this unfair treatment.
